Strike knocks down and rescues Robin

The Cuckoo's Calling

Strike’s rescue of Robin at the entrance to his Denmark Street office transforms an accidental collision into a moment of immediate peril: as she is thrown toward the staircase, he catches her by her coat and pulls her back onto firm ground. The rescue prevents a potentially lethal fall, but leaves Robin hurt and Strike acutely aware of the force with which he has grabbed her.

The collision

Robin approaches the office door slowly, absorbed in the wonder of arriving at a place connected with a long-held private ambition. Before she can touch the handle, the glass door flies open. A disheveled man bursts through and slams into her, knocking her off her feet and sending her backward toward the void beyond the staircase.

The collision is abrupt and uncontrolled: Robin’s handbag flies away and her arms windmill as she loses her footing. The staircase makes the impact more than an awkward mishap. In an instant, the stable ground beneath her gives way to the possibility of a lethal fall.

Strike’s intervention

Strike reacts to Robin’s scream by throwing out an arm and seizing a handful of cloth and flesh. He manages, with a wrench and a tussle, to drag her back onto firm ground. His response is instinctive rather than considered; the danger leaves no time for a measured rescue.

The save itself causes Robin pain. Bent over against the office door and whimpering, she holds a hand beneath her coat’s lapel. Strike deduces from her hunched posture that he has caught a substantial part of her left breast. A curtain of bright blonde hair obscures most of her flushed face, but he sees tears in her exposed eye.

Immediate aftermath

Strike apologizes loudly, explaining that he had not seen her or expected anyone to be there. His exclamation and Robin’s shrieks echo through the stairwell. The noise carries beyond the two of them: the graphic designer in the office below calls up to ask what is happening, and the bar manager, asleep in the attic flat above Strike’s office, makes a muffled complaint after being disturbed.

The scene ends with Robin on firm ground, but not untouched: Strike’s grip has replaced the immediate threat of the stairs with pain and embarrassment. The rescue is a sharp reversal from near-fatal danger to safety, achieved through a physical intervention that is itself clumsy and painful. In this first encounter, the office threshold becomes the setting for both the peril and the awkwardness of their meeting.
