Conway's Soldiers movement rule

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Conway's Soldiers movement rule gives Christopher a precise puzzle to work through when other thoughts become difficult to manage. Its exact constraints make the problem both a mathematical exercise and a way to fill his attention deliberately.

Definition and Rules

The puzzle uses a chessboard extending infinitely in every direction. Colored tiles begin on every square below a horizontal starting line. A tile may move only by jumping horizontally or vertically—not diagonally—over another colored tile into an empty square two squares away. Each such move removes the tile that was jumped over. The objective is to see how far above the starting line the tiles can be moved. Despite the board's unlimited extent, Christopher knows that no sequence of moves can carry a tile more than four squares above that line. The fixed limit gives the puzzle a definite mathematical answer even as its possible arrangements invite extended exploration.

Christopher's Use of the Puzzle

Christopher turns to Conway's Soldiers while overwhelmed by too many thoughts to decide what to do. He has given Toby two pellets of rat food and grips his Swiss Army knife in his other hand; after taking his hands from his ears, he groans to cover the noise, hoping not to draw other people over to speak to him. He then works on the puzzle in his head to make it clearer. The problem can be made as complicated as he needs: he can imagine a larger board and more involved moves until it fills his mind. Its usefulness in this moment lies not in discovering the answer, which he already knows, but in controlling how much attention the exercise occupies. When he looks up, a policeman is standing in front of him and asks, “Anyone at home?” Christopher does not understand what the question means.

Significance

The rule's contrast between a firm limit and expandable complexity mirrors its practical role for Christopher: the outcome is settled, but the route through the puzzle can keep his mind occupied. In the surrounding account, difficulty interpreting other people’s indirect signals and speech is set against the relief of clear, explicit instructions. Conway's Soldiers offers a different kind of clarity: a fully specified set of moves that Christopher can apply independently when the surrounding situation is hard to process.
