Hampstead Wilds
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TimeHampstead Heath is where Christopher and his mother sit together after his journey to London, but the outing becomes a painful turning point: when she tells him that he will take his mathematics A-level the following year, he reacts with intense distress. The scene connects the open landscape and distant planes with the immediate uncertainty of his education and his return to Swindon.
The outing
Christopher’s mother takes him by taxi to Hampstead Heath in the afternoon. They sit on top of a hill and watch planes approaching Heathrow Airport in the distance. Christopher has a red ice lolly from an ice-cream van; the quiet outing is interrupted when his mother tells him she has contacted Mrs. Gascoyne and said that Christopher will sit his mathematics A-level the next year, rather than immediately.
The announcement and its consequences
Christopher throws away the ice lolly and screams for a long time. His distress is severe enough to make breathing difficult, and a passerby asks whether he is all right. His mother answers the stranger, who then leaves. The episode shows that postponing the exam is not a minor adjustment for Christopher: the prospect of losing the chance to take it now is bound up with the pain and uncertainty of his situation in London.
Aftermath
Exhausted, Christopher returns with his mother to the flat by taxi. The next morning she asks Mr. Shears to get science and mathematics books from the library, but the children’s books do not suit Christopher and he does not read them. Having eaten nothing since throwing away the ice lolly, he is given a chart with stars and Complan to help him drink. Later, his mother says they must return to Swindon because staying in London longer could result in someone getting hurt. The Heath scene thus precedes a change in their plans and places Christopher’s exam, his distress, and the practical strain of the London stay in the same chain of events.
Narrative significance
The scene brings Christopher’s precise educational goal into collision with the unsettled circumstances of his reunion with his mother. Its details are concrete—the hill, the planes, the red ice lolly, and the proposed exam delay—but the outing does not resolve the conflict. Instead, his reaction is followed by efforts to manage his distress and, ultimately, the decision to leave London. Hampstead Heath is therefore remembered less as a destination than as the place where a change to Christopher’s plans becomes emotionally undeniable.
