Ben Jonathan
The Dark ForestBen Jonathan is a special commissioner associated with the Solar Fleet Joint Conference and one of the few officials who bridges the different historical phases of the Wallfacer Project. His significance lies less in personal biography than in his repeated function as a human face of institutional power: he welcomes Luo Ji into the future, explains the political order that has developed during Luo Ji’s hibernation, participates in the hearing that formally ends Luo Ji’s ordinary status as a Wallfacer, and later announces that the project has been revived with Luo Ji as its sole remaining Wallfacer.
Identity and Institutional Position
Ben Jonathan is identified as the special commissioner of the Fleet Joint Conference, later referred to through the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. His office places him between military command, international administration, and the exceptional legal structure created for the Wallfacer Project. The project was designed to select individuals who would formulate strategies entirely within their own minds, while presenting false motives and misleading actions to the outside world. Because Wallfacers were granted extensive authority over military resources and did not have to explain their commands, commissioners such as Jonathan represent the administrative machinery that recognizes, supervises, and communicates this extraordinary power without possessing access to the plans themselves.
The Wallfacer system also extended beyond a single historical emergency. Its governing act was placed on a legal level equal to the UN Charter, and hibernation technology was intended to preserve its continuity across the centuries leading to the Doomsday Battle. Jonathan’s appearances therefore belong to a bureaucratic structure that has outlived its original political moment. He is not merely an aide to one Wallfacer; he is a representative of an institution that claims authority across generations.
Guide to Luo Ji’s Future
Jonathan first meets Luo Ji after Luo Ji has been reawakened into a world almost two centuries removed from the one he knew. His formal suit does not display the luminous images characteristic of the new era, making it resemble clothing from an earlier age and suggesting a deliberate solemnity. Jonathan introduces himself, explains that he arranged Luo Ji’s reawakening at the committee’s request, and tells him that they will attend the final hearing of the Wallfacer Project. He also checks whether Luo Ji can understand contemporary English, which has changed substantially during the intervening centuries.
Jonathan’s guidance is practical and controlled. Before the hearing, he explains that Europe has become the European Commonwealth, that Russia and Belarus have unified as the Russian Federation, and that the English-speaking and French-speaking parts of Canada have separated into two countries. He then describes the division of human political power between Earth International and Fleet International. The Asian Fleet, European Fleet, and North American Fleet form the Solar Fleet, while the former Planetary Defense Council has evolved into the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. The Joint Conference has a coordinating role but little direct power; actual authority over humanity’s space forces rests with the supreme commands of the three major fleets.
This exposition gives Jonathan a distinctive narrative role. He is both a messenger from the future and a mediator between historical scales. Luo Ji encounters the new world through Jonathan’s measured briefing rather than through an abstract historical account, and Jonathan’s calm manner contrasts with Luo Ji’s shock at the extent of social and political change. Yet the linguistic exchange also reveals cultural hybridity: Jonathan’s English is filled with Chinese vocabulary, while the world’s major languages have blended together. His speech embodies the future’s altered civilization even as his official clothing evokes the past.
The Final Hearing and Restoration of Ordinary Status
Jonathan brings Luo Ji to the final hearing of the Wallfacer Project, convened by the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. The chair announces a vote on Proposition 649, submitted by the North American Fleet and the European Fleet at the forty-seventh Joint Conference. The proposition records that the Wallfacer Project was established by the Planetary Defense Council in the second year of the Trisolar Crisis, adopted unanimously by the permanent members of the United Nations, and implemented the following year to develop hidden strategies against the Trisolaran invasion beyond the reach of the sophons.
The hearing also establishes the project’s extraordinary duration. It has continued for 205 years, despite a hiatus lasting more than a century, and its leadership has passed from the former Planetary Defense Council to the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. Jonathan’s presence at this hearing makes him a participant in the administrative transfer of an old emergency mandate into the jurisdiction of a new space-based order. The vote is presented as simple, but its consequences reach backward across two centuries of law and forward toward the still-unresolved threat of the Doomsday Battle.
After the vote, Jonathan tells Luo Ji that the outcome is what Luo Ji had wanted. Luo Ji responds that he is grateful to the Joint Conference for restoring his ordinary status. Jonathan then makes clear that he has been empowered to discuss the matter with Luo Ji in detail and invites him to begin with his greatest concern. That concern is not military or philosophical but personal: Luo Ji asks about his wife and child. Jonathan reassures him that both are alive and remain in hibernation, and that Luo Ji may request their reawakening whenever he wishes. At this point, Jonathan appears as the humane and efficient official who converts institutional action into personally intelligible information.
Return as Herald of the Revived Project
Jonathan later reappears beside Bill Hines in a scene where public crowds kneel on the sand and address Luo Ji through religious imagery. Hines informs Luo Ji that he has been appointed Luo Ji’s liaison to the UN Wallfacer Project Commission and that the project has been revived, with Luo Ji named its sole Wallfacer. Jonathan confirms the decision in his capacity as special commissioner of the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. He reports that the Asian Fleet, European Fleet, and North American Fleet have agreed to the revalidation of the Wallfacer Act and recognized Luo Ji’s status.
The announcement reverses the earlier restoration of Luo Ji’s ordinary identity. Jonathan therefore marks a political cycle rather than a simple progression: he once helped communicate the end of Luo Ji’s exceptional status, and he later announces its renewal in an even more concentrated form. Luo Ji is no longer one Wallfacer among four candidates but the sole Wallfacer, while the public gives him two symbolic identities—an angel of justice for theists and the spokesperson for a superior civilization in the Milky Way for atheists. Jonathan’s official language stands beside these competing popular interpretations, showing how the institution and the public invest the same figure with different meanings.
Secrecy, Coercion, and Narrative Function
Jonathan’s most severe institutional significance emerges when the authorities confront Luo Ji over the secret of the spell that destroyed a star. Luo Ji refuses to disclose how he used it. The hearing then raises the possibility that the reawakening of his wife and child could be made conditional on his revealing the secret. Although the proposal is voiced within a secret hearing, it exposes the coercive underside of the Wallfacer system: the same legal order that grants a Wallfacer freedom from explanation can also preserve control over the people most important to him.
The officials justify the pressure by arguing that the Wallfacer Project has no place in modern society while simultaneously claiming that its revival leaves the decisions of the commission from two centuries earlier in force. Under those resolutions, Zhuang Yan and Luo Ji’s child are not to reawaken until the Doomsday Battle. This contradiction gives Jonathan’s role its greatest weight. He is associated with a system that presents itself as lawful continuity, yet uses inherited emergency law to override ordinary expectations of family, consent, and personal freedom.
Jonathan is consequently less a fully developed psychological protagonist than a convincingly functional institutional character. His courtesy, precise explanations, and recurring presence make the machinery of historical power legible, while his later association with the threat against Luo Ji’s family reveals that administrative calm does not equal moral neutrality. He guides, informs, certifies, and enforces; through those changing functions, the narrative shows how exceptional authority survives its original crisis by moving from one organization, legal framework, and historical generation to another.
