Wallfacer Project

The Dark Forest

The Wallfacer Project is the principal strategic institution created during the Trisolar Crisis to resist the Trisolaran invasion under conditions of near-total informational transparency. Its decisive premise is that the sophons can monitor human language, documents, computers, and communications but cannot directly read an individual’s thoughts. The project therefore makes the human mind into the last secure territory available to Earth, while transforming selected individuals into both military commanders and deliberate instruments of deception.

Origins and Strategic Premise

The project was conceived during emergency negotiations among the permanent members of the former Security Council at the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis. The immediate cause was the arrival of additional sophons in the Solar System. Because these particles could observe the Earth continuously, humanity’s conventional defense program was exposed in its strategic principles as well as in its smallest technological and military details. Meetings, files, computer storage, plans, deployments, and communications could all become available to the enemy command four light-years away as soon as they were created.

This transparency did not give the Trisolarans an absolute strategic advantage. Their direct, open mode of communication made them deficient in tricks, camouflage, and deception. The project’s founders consequently sought to preserve humanity’s advantage in strategic misdirection by establishing plans that the enemy could not inspect. The Wallfacer Project was judged to be the only feasible proposal among several possible secret programs, and it was intended to operate in parallel with the exposed mainstream defense effort rather than replace it.

Structure, Powers, and Method

At the project’s center was the selection of a group of Wallfacers, each charged with formulating and directing a strategic plan without communicating its true content to the outside world. The plan’s aims, necessary steps, and ultimate strategy were to remain inside the Wallfacer’s mind. Public actions, explanations, and apparent objectives could therefore be false, forming a deliberately constructed maze of disguise, misdirection, and deception designed to confuse both the Trisolarans and humanity itself.

The Wallfacers received extensive authority to mobilize and exploit part of Earth’s existing military resources. They were not required to explain commands or actions, no matter how incomprehensible those actions appeared. This exceptional freedom was balanced by institutional oversight: the Planetary Defense Council was responsible for monitoring and controlling Wallfacer activity, and under the Wallfacer Act it was the sole institution empowered to veto a Wallfacer command.

The project was also designed to survive across historical time rather than depend on a single generation. Wallfacers could use hibernation technology to bridge the centuries leading to the Doomsday Battle. They themselves would determine when they awoke, under what circumstances, and for how long. International law gave the Wallfacer Act a status equal to the UN Charter for the next four centuries, requiring it to work alongside national laws and protect the execution of the Wallfacers’ plans.

Political Authority and Human Cost

The project’s power rested on an unusual contradiction. It demanded absolute individual secrecy while depending on public institutions, military resources, legal protections, and mass obedience. A Wallfacer was expected to become strategically opaque even to allies, while the surrounding political order was expected to execute commands whose purpose it could not know. The project thus made uncertainty not an accidental weakness but an official operating principle.

The project also imposed an extraordinary psychological burden. Its Wallfacers were described as undertaking the most difficult mission in human history, with their souls closed off from the world and even from the wider universe. Their only communication partner and spiritual support would be themselves. The language of the project elevated solitary thought into a civic duty, but the later history of the institution shows that its legal protections did not eliminate political pressure. After two centuries, the revised Wallfacer Act was used to prevent Luo Ji from reawakening Zhuang Yan and Xia Xia, with officials claiming authority to take whatever steps were necessary to keep a Wallfacer focused on his work. His special powers could not overcome that restriction, revealing that the project could also turn its own protections into instruments of coercion.

Historical Development and Reassessment

The Wallfacer Project remained active for 205 years, although that period included a hiatus lasting more than a century. During its long history, leadership passed from the former Planetary Defense Council to the Solar Fleet Joint Conference. Its original emergency design consequently became a continuing constitutional and military structure, carried across radically changed eras of human civilization.

Its legacy was inseparable from the broader militarization of human society. The construction of the space fleet required enormous resources, while the development of spacecraft, space weapons, recirculating ecosystems, and space ports represented frontiers that could take a century merely to establish. The completion of the Tianti Space Elevator and the breakthrough in controlled fusion encouraged humanity, but sober leaders recognized that these achievements marked only the beginning of planetary defense. The project existed within this wider transformation, in which survival demanded technological expansion even as the cost threatened to lower living standards and intensify social strain.

That strain also produced environmental damage. Heavy industry accelerated for the sake of the space forces, while environmental protection was denounced as potentially treasonous because Earth might ultimately belong to the Trisolarans. Pollution, greenhouse effects, climate anomalies, and desertification contributed to agricultural collapse and the Great Ravine. The Wallfacer Project therefore belongs to a defense system whose attempt to preserve civilization also helped expose the destructive material costs of preparing for war.

Enemies, Consequences, and Significance

The project’s secrecy made every Wallfacer a target. In a vision or embedded scene of the Three Body virtual world, Qin Shi Huang announced that the Lord had issued a command to destroy Wallfacer Luo Ji, and Mozi identified it as the second assassination order directed against him. The threat demonstrates the project’s central strategic paradox: concealment made the Wallfacers difficult to interpret, but their very opacity made them important enough to eliminate.

The project’s logic also extended into later schemes of deterrence and defense. When Luo Ji discussed the axioms of cosmic civilization with Shi Qiang, the problem was not simply whether another civilization was benevolent or malicious. Even a benevolent civilization could not determine at the beginning of communication whether the other side was benevolent. The project’s world therefore treats contact, exposure, and declared intention as dangerous because no message can reliably reveal motive. This is the same security dilemma that makes hidden plans necessary on Earth: defensive preparations can be read as threats, and uncertainty drives actors toward concealment, escalation, or preemption.

Later proposals continued to use the Solar System as an engineered defensive environment. The Snow Project sought to use stellar hydrogen bombs and Neptune’s oil film to create clouds of space dust that would leave tracks when the droplets passed through them. The proposal shows how the Wallfacer era made planetary and orbital engineering part of strategic thought, but it also echoes the project’s deeper principle: survival depends on controlling what an enemy can observe and on turning the environment itself into a medium of information.

The Wallfacer Project’s most enduring significance lies in its conversion of privacy into military infrastructure. Its plans are hidden not in sealed rooms or encrypted archives but in minds that must perform falsehood in public while preserving an inaccessible intention within. Even the completed Gravitational-Wave Antenna, whose continuous emissions create rain and a green oasis in the desert of northern China, reflects the same civilization-wide movement from ordinary planetary life toward strategic engineering. The project is therefore both a defense organization and a political experiment: it asks whether humanity can entrust its future to isolated individuals while still maintaining collective control, and whether deception can preserve civilization without permanently transforming it into the kind of transparent, suspicious world the project was created to resist.
