Remember Aunt Martha

The Dark Half

“Remember Aunt Martha” is a code phrase shared by Liz and Thad Beaumont that becomes a covert appeal for Thad to find and kill George Stark. Its meaning rests on an intimate history Stark cannot fully read: a running joke about Liz’s aunt becomes a way for Liz to signal danger while Stark is listening, and for Thad to recognize the message without stating it plainly.

Origin of the Phrase

Martha Tellford is Liz’s aunt, known to the couple through her visits to their summer house in Castle Rock. During one prolonged stay, Thad and Liz privately joked about escaping her visits; in their imagined exchanges, they teased one another about telling Martha to leave. Neither actually confronted her. Instead, Thad eventually drove her to the Portland Jetport, where she departed for Albany after remarking on her shooting. Martha’s trips to the local dump to shoot rats supplied the joke with its sharp, memorable image.

The phrase acquired a second, private meaning in the years after Martha’s last visit. “Remember Aunt Martha” became shorthand between Liz and Thad for getting a .22 from the summer house’s storage shed and shooting an especially tiresome guest. The code was comic in its ordinary use, drawing its force from the distance between the couple’s harmless private joke and the deliberately excessive image it invoked. Their shared reference also depended on a specific place and object: the Castle Rock summer house and the gun stored there.

Stark’s Message and Liz’s Warning

When Stark has Liz and the twins in his power, Liz tells Thad that Stark says Thad will know where they are going and asks him to remember Aunt Martha. She also conveys Stark’s demand that Thad lose the men accompanying him and join them by nightfall. Stark presents the proposed meeting as a writing collaboration, promising that the two of them working together will produce the best book ever. Liz’s account thus carries both Stark’s explicit ultimatum and the phrase that allows her to communicate something beyond it.

Thad does not immediately announce what he believes Liz means. Instead, he tells Stark that the phrase refers to the summer house in Castle Rock, explaining that Martha is Liz’s aunt and that the couple used to joke about hiding from her there. He frames the explanation as a way of identifying the destination and even warns that, if the telephone is being monitored, Stark has exposed his own plans. The explanation is a calculated misdirection: Stark accepts it, and Thad concludes that Stark’s access to his thoughts is not complete.

The Hidden Meaning

Once away from the conversation, Thad tests the cover story against what he and Liz actually shared. They had joked about running away from Aunt Martha, but the destinations they named were Aruba or Tahiti, not Castle Rock, because Martha already knew about the summer house and had visited it often. The difference between their genuine joke and Thad’s account to Stark reveals the phrase’s operative meaning: it is not simply a clue to where Liz is being taken.

Thad recalls that the couple had used “Remember Aunt Martha” as a code, including once during the People magazine interview-and-photo sessions, when Liz invoked it in reference to the interviewer, Phyllis Myers. The remembered episode confirms that the phrase could be used discreetly in public as well as in private. In the present crisis, however, its implication is no longer comic. Thad understands Liz to be asking him to come after Stark and kill him.

Stakes and Significance

The inference lands with force because Thad knows Liz as someone who cries at reports of homeless animals being put to sleep. He reasons that if she is invoking the code now, she must believe there is no other way to save herself and the twins: either Stark dies, or they do. The phrase therefore changes from a joke about an irritating guest into a decision about survival, carrying a lethal implication without speaking it directly to Stark.

Its effectiveness also marks a limit in Stark’s mental access to Thad. Stark can repeat Liz’s words and demand collaboration, but he does not understand the couple’s private history well enough to catch the deception. Thad uses that gap to protect the meaning of Liz’s warning, even as he remains under pressure to evade his police escort and reach the Castle Rock summer house. The code is both a marital shorthand and a practical act of resistance: an old joke lets Liz ask for help in terms Stark can hear but cannot interpret.
