Thad’s fight with Stark to protect the twins

The Dark Half

Thad’s fight with George Stark to protect the twins is the decisive physical confrontation in the office: as Stark turns his gun toward William, Thad intervenes, using whatever is within reach to keep the children from being shot. The struggle makes protection an immediate test of action, while the sparrows battering at the door bring the supernatural threat into the room.

The Fight Begins

Stark reaches for Thad as birds start striking the secret door. In the room beyond, falling paperweights and breaking glass signal the force of their assault; inside the office, both twins are crying, their voices blending with the sparrows’ incessant calls. Stark orders Thad to stop whatever he is doing, but Thad answers the threat with a pencil, striking Stark in the throat. The attack does not end the confrontation: Stark pulls the pencil free and asks what Thad is doing, now hearing the birds himself. For the first time, fear becomes visible in Stark’s eyes as he looks toward the closed door.

Thad tells Stark that he is writing the end in the real world. Stark responds by proposing that they write it for everyone. Their exchange turns the fight into more than an effort to disarm an armed opponent: writing, which has bound the two men together, becomes the language through which Thad declares that the conflict can have a final consequence outside the page.

Protecting William and Wendy

When Stark aims at William, Thad searches the desk and finds the slate paperweight Stark had been handling. He brings it down on Stark’s wrist just before the gun fires. The blow deflects the barrel, and the bullet strikes the floor close to William’s foot rather than the child. The twins instinctively put their arms around each other, a shared gesture of protection that shows the danger has reached them directly even as Thad tries to stand between them and Stark.

Stark drives the pencil into Thad’s shoulder. Thad cries out and shoves him away; Stark trips over a typewriter in the corner, falls against the wall, and drops the pistol while trying to transfer it to his other hand. The fight therefore shifts repeatedly without resolving: Thad’s intervention prevents the shot from hitting William, but Stark remains dangerous and continues to resist.

The Fight’s Unresolved Turn

Stark drops the pistol, but the struggle is not over. The sparrows’ battering has become a steady thunder, and the secret door begins to swing open on its central pivot. One injured bird slips into the office and falls to the floor. As Thad and Stark remain locked in the fight, the threat at the door advances from a sound beyond the wall to a presence entering the room.
