Assenomi
The Deer KingAssenomi, a messenger of the Echo Master in Yomida Forest, draws Van and Yuna into the forest’s world at a moment when Van is troubled by the consequences of a rochai bite. Her work moves between welcome and warning: she invites father and daughter to meet the Echo Master, helps usher them into the refuge, and later rushes in with news that another man has been bitten. Though the evidence offers only brief scenes, her appearances mark the passage from uncertain travel toward knowledge of the danger affecting Van and Yuna.
Identity and Introduction
Assenomi first enters the story as the visitor announced by the Wet Feathers, a messenger whose arrival is preceded by an unfamiliar scent carried on the wind. Van recognizes a mixture of forest moss, herb-seasoned food, and a faint trace of rotten eggs before he sees her. The scent makes her entrance feel distinct from the snowbound camp around him, announcing a visitor from a different world before she speaks.
She is a small woman, perhaps in her mid-fifties, with lines around her eyes. When she meets Van, she carries two glossy raven feathers, one large and one small. The feathers provide a visible sign of her message and become an immediate point of contact with Yuna, who takes them and admires them. Assenomi responds with a smile rather than rebuking the child, presenting the invitation in a manner that is formal but not forbidding.
The Invitation to Yomida Forest
Assenomi identifies herself as the Echo Master’s messenger and explains that her master lives deep in Yomida Forest, where fire-flows seep from the earth and boiling water gushes forth. She says the Echo Master wishes to meet both Van and his daughter. The request is sudden, and she acknowledges that it may be confusing, but urges them to travel while a break between blizzards allows it. Her message is therefore both an invitation and a matter of timing: the weather has opened a temporary route, and she asks them to use it now.
Van accepts after considering the risk that he and Yuna might have been changed by the beasts that bit them, and his fear that the gods could regard them as corrupted. He also weighs the burden their presence might place on Tohma’s family against the need to understand what is happening, especially for Yuna’s future. His decision is not presented as Assenomi overcoming a refusal through argument; instead, the urgency of his own unanswered questions makes the meeting necessary. She receives his agreement with evident relief and apologizes for arriving without warning.
Welcome at the Forest Refuge
At the cave entrance, Assenomi uses a whistle to summon another woman dressed much like herself. Its piercing note rings through the air and seems to be drawn deep into the opening; Assenomi blows three times, and the other woman appears as the final reverberations fade. The call makes the forest refuge seem organized around signals and coordinated hospitality, even as its entrance remains a cave.
Van offers a pouch of copper coins that Ohma had given him to present upon reaching Yomida Forest. The woman refuses it, explaining that the Echo Master instructed her not to accept anything because Van and his companions are guests. She welcomes them, recognizes how exhausting travel through the snow must have been, and offers to take care of their reindeer. Assenomi’s invitation thus leads into a reception governed by hospitality rather than payment, extending the welcome she began at the camp.
Warning and Narrative Role
Assenomi reappears during a conversation about the rochai bite. Van has asked whether something harmful entered his body, comparing the possibility to infection from the saliva of a sick dog; Suohl understands from his question that a rochai did bite him. At that moment, urgent voices and hurried footsteps interrupt the discussion. Assenomi rushes into the room with men carrying an injured person on a wooden door and announces to the Echo Master that the man has been bitten by a rochai.
The repetition of the bite changes the force of her role. Assenomi first brings Van toward the Echo Master because he needs to understand his own condition; later, she reports another case directly to the master. Her warning turns an individual fear into an urgent occurrence witnessed by others, though the available scenes do not establish the injured man’s fate or what action follows. As messenger and herald, Assenomi connects the journey into Yomida Forest with the story’s developing concern over rochai bites: she carries an invitation when knowledge is sought and an alarm when the danger appears again.
