Shevek’s Journey Between Worlds

The Port Wall

A Boundary Made Real
The two faces of a wall
The wall around Port of Anarres is physically slight but politically immense. From one side it protects Anarres from the outside; from the other it encloses the planet like a prison.
A departure under protest
Shevek crosses that boundary while a hostile crowd gathers. His departure begins as an act of personal initiative, but it also exposes how little either world knows about the other.
Leaving the Moon

A World Falls Away
The first separation
Strapped into the Mindful, Shevek watches Anarres shrink into a pale sphere. The physical departure becomes an inner rupture: he feels that his world has fallen away and that he is alone.
A journey with a purpose
He has chosen the voyage to break isolation and make communication possible. Yet leaving also means placing himself in the hands of strangers and surrendering the familiar freedom of his home society.
Urras as Paradise

The Lure of Abundance
A world of green
Urras overwhelms Shevek with forests, birds, rain, food, and architectural beauty. Its abundance seems to answer the deprivation of Anarres, and he initially experiences the planet as his ancestral home.
Beauty without belonging
Comfort and courtesy make him feel welcomed, but the social arrangements beneath them remain obscure. His admiration is sincere, yet it does not resolve whether he can belong to a society organized around property and rank.
A Guest in a Box

Hospitality and Containment
Protected from the public
The university provides rooms, colleagues, money, and access to scientific facilities. At the same time, Shevek is kept among elites, separated from workers, and watched through concealed surveillance.
The limits of welcome
The welcome is genuine at moments, but it is also political management. Shevek gradually recognizes that his hosts want scientific results and public prestige, not necessarily the free exchange he came to foster.
Return Across the Wall

Homecoming as Risk
An uncertain landing
Shevek returns aboard the Davenant knowing that supporters and opponents may meet him at the Port. His return is not a retreat from danger; it is a decision to face the consequences of opening contact.
A door opened both ways
He invites Ketho to land, extending his challenge beyond the old boundary. Shevek comes home with empty hands, but the voyage has made renewed exchange imaginable.
