A Father’s Home

Safety in Palat’s Care
A reliable relationship
Palat remains affectionate and dependable after Rulag leaves. Shevek trusts him and takes pleasure in their visits, even though their time together is limited.
A partial belonging
Palat gives Shevek a home within the community but cannot make him feel fully like others. The early bond supports Shevek while leaving him alert to what separation removes.
The First Journey Away

Learning to Leave and Return
Work in a hard landscape
Shevek resents his posting to the afforestation project, then discovers pride in collective work and intimacy with its workers. The experience changes his relationship to labor and to his own abilities.
A return that matters
Returning to the Institute feels as important as leaving. Shevek’s desire to come back foreshadows his later conviction that a true voyage must preserve the possibility of return.
The Exile on Urras

Welcome Without Home
Surrounded by strangers
Shevek finds brilliant colleagues and a beautiful landscape, yet gradually feels separated from both Urras and Anarres. His home world remains inaccessible, while his hosts misunderstand what he hopes to achieve.
A double isolation
He recognizes that he has taken distance from his own society as well as crossed into another. Scientific opportunity does not resolve the loneliness created by political separation.
A Choice to Leave the Campus

Escape Without a Destination
Flight from protection
Shevek leaves the university and seeks out the underground, no longer willing to accept comfort that depends on silence. The choice removes the safety of his official position.
Freedom under pressure
He does not know whether any place on Urras is outside the prison of power. The journey becomes an attempt to find human help rather than merely a route to safety.
Home at the Port

Return with Open Hands
Facing a divided home
Shevek knows that opponents may challenge his landing, even though friends have organized to receive him. Coming home means facing the divisions he helped reveal.
A changed meaning of return
He returns not to an unchanged refuge but to a society still capable of responding to initiative. His invitation to Ketho makes homecoming an opening rather than a final escape.
