Stewart Taylor

The Good Lord Bird

Stewart Taylor is one of John Brown’s men during the Harpers Ferry raid. His actions at the railway bridge help secure a route across the Potomac, but he is later killed when federal forces overrun the engine house, making him one of the raiders who does not survive the assault.

Role in the Raid

Taylor appears alongside Oliver Brown at the train near the rifle works. The two approach the engine master and coal handler with rifles and direct them away from the locomotive. The narrator is running toward the bridge and cannot initially make out their conversation, but sees them take charge of the railway workers.

Holding the Bridge

Later, Taylor and Oliver are among the raiders resisting a group trying to force them from the Baltimore and Ohio bridge. Their presence helps the narrator and two other men cross to the Maryland side amid the fighting. The bridge is therefore both a route for escape and a contested point that the raiders must keep open.

Death and Significance

Taylor remains at the engine house during the final assault. When Jeb Stuart and the U.S. Cavalry enter, Taylor is among those killed; the account names him alongside several other men from Brown’s party. His brief appearances connect the raid’s plan for controlling rail infrastructure to its eventual collapse: the bridge offers passage for a time, but cannot protect those left behind at the engine house.
