Dollinger attacks Kimmy and Matt; Olivia shoots him dead

The Innocent

Cal Dollinger attacks Kimmy Dale and Matt; Olivia shoots him dead in a confrontation that turns on a rapid reversal of who can protect whom. After Loren Muse spots Dollinger at a trailer and recognizes him as Adam Yates’s associate, Matt sees Dollinger enter with a gun. Inside, Olivia and Kimmy are in danger. Matt rushes in, Loren follows, and Olivia ultimately uses Kimmy’s concealed pistol to stop Dollinger.

The Attack Begins

Loren brakes when she sees Dollinger crouched at a trailer window. Recognizing him as Yates’s man, she warns Matt that they need a weapon. Dollinger notices them, draws a gun, and goes inside. Matt does not wait: he runs toward the trailer, sees Olivia and another woman he assumes is Kimmy through a window, and watches Dollinger point his weapon at them and fire. Kimmy falls; Olivia disappears from view as Matt crashes through the window to reach them.

Matt and Loren Intervene

Matt tackles Dollinger, but the larger man barely yields. When Dollinger aims at him, Matt grabs his wrist and tries to control the gun; Dollinger overpowers him and strikes him. Matt keeps resisting because Olivia is inside, even as he begins to lose consciousness. Loren calls out, “Freeze! Police! Drop your weapon!” Dollinger releases Matt, then turns his aim back toward Olivia. Matt gets up again, determined not to win the fight but to give his wife time to escape.

Loren attacks Dollinger from behind, but he throws her against a wall. Matt tries to reach Dollinger’s eyes and instead catches his throat, gripping it with both hands. The struggle recalls Matt’s earlier fight with Stephen McGrath on a college campus in Massachusetts: the physical action draws an old history of violence into the present, though Matt’s immediate purpose now is to protect Olivia.

Olivia’s Shot and the Aftermath

Dollinger frees his gun hand and fires at Matt, who is hit above the hip and loses his grip. As Dollinger prepares to shoot him again, a shot rings out. Dollinger falls, and Matt sees Olivia holding a small pistol. The apparent rescue has come from the person he was trying to save.

Kimmy is alive, though shot above the elbow. When she tells Olivia, “You remembered,” Olivia explains that Kimmy always kept a gun in her boot and that she had taken a few seconds to retrieve it. That detail supplies the scene’s decisive turn: the concealed weapon gives Olivia the means to intervene while Matt and Loren are occupied with Dollinger. His attack ends with his death, and the struggle leaves Matt, Loren, and Kimmy injured or endangered, but alive.
