Pre-9·11 era
The InnocentThe Pre-9/11 era is the novel’s dividing line between Matt Hunter’s earlier experience of crime and punishment and the more tightly monitored conditions he encounters later. It gives his prison-acquired knowledge an expiration date: methods that once seemed useful for avoiding detection cannot simply be trusted in a changed security environment.
A Past Marked by Criminal Justice
In the account of Matt’s original case, campus security and police arrive after the incident, and he tells them what happened. His parents hire a prominent New York City lawyer, who advises him to plead self-defense; Matt follows that advice. The sequence locates his first encounter with the legal system before the later security shift, while showing how quickly private violence becomes a public and judicial matter.
The trial’s verdict and sentence are filtered through a sound that Matt cannot shut out. The press is watching, and the prospect of a lenient prison is rejected in the context of an election year. The passage links punishment not only to the verdict but also to public scrutiny and political timing, establishing an earlier institutional setting against which later references to security will register.
Changed Conditions After September 11
Years later, Matt considers using methods learned in prison to evade detection. He recognizes that those tips were developed before September 11 and that security has changed substantially since then. Rather than treating the old advice as dependable, he knows he must think carefully, move quickly, and rely on luck. The contrast makes the era a practical constraint on his choices: knowledge from his past may still help, but it no longer guarantees safety.
Narrative Function
The reference to the Pre-9/11 era connects distinct stages of Matt’s life without making them interchangeable. His earlier case establishes the legal and media pressures that helped shape his history; the later comparison shows that the world in which he must act has changed. The temporal marker therefore carries suspense as well as context: Matt’s experience offers possible tactics, while the post-September 11 present limits their usefulness.
