Oedipus blinds himself and leaves Thebes

The Interpretation of Dreams

Oedipus blinds himself and leaves his homeland after learning that he is both the murderer of Laius and the son of Laius and Jocasta. This concluding action completes the oracle’s fulfillment: the catastrophe follows not from a deliberate pursuit of the crime, but from a revelation that overturns Oedipus’s understanding of his own identity and past.

The Revelation

The play’s action is organized around a revelation that grows more intense while being skilfully delayed. Its progress is compared to psychoanalysis: what Oedipus has committed without knowing it is gradually disclosed, until he recognizes that he killed Laius and that the murdered king was his father. The same discovery establishes that Jocasta is his mother. Recognition therefore joins two facts that had been separate in his understanding, turning an investigation into a confrontation with his own history.

Catastrophe and Departure

Shattered by the abomination he committed in ignorance, Oedipus blinds himself and leaves his homeland. The action described here does not present the departure as an escape from the oracle: it follows the recognition that the oracle has already been fulfilled. The ending links knowledge to irreversible consequence, as the truth about Oedipus’s parentage and actions becomes the point at which his former life can no longer continue.

Fate and Tragic Effect

The ending belongs to a tragedy of fate, traditionally understood through the contrast between the gods’ power and human efforts to resist disaster. Yet the account argues that this contrast alone cannot explain why the tragedy continues to move modern audiences. Invented tragedies in which innocent people struggle against a curse or oracle have failed to produce the same effect. Oedipus’s fate remains compelling because the story touches an inward recognition: its force comes from the subject matter of the oracle and the possibility that its curse could be shared, not simply from the spectacle of human powerlessness.
