Hwin

The Last Battle

Hwin is the mare who appears among the reunited company in Aslan’s country. Her presence beside Bree links the gathering of old companions to the larger restoration of Narnia’s past: the welcome there reaches beyond kings and human heroes to include the talking horses who shared earlier adventures.

Identity and Reunion

Hwin appears as part of the company arriving from Archenland. She is named as the Mare and is accompanied by Bree the Horse, alongside Cor, King Lune, Queen Aravis, and Corin Thunder-Fist. The list places her among familiar figures whose lives had crossed the histories of Narnia and Archenland.

Place in the Gathering

The reunion takes place in a garden whose scale exceeds what its entrance first suggests. As newcomers pass through the golden gates, people come to meet them from every direction; Hwin is included in this expansive welcome. The gathering brings together companions from different periods, from the rulers and heroes of the War of Deliverance to the Beavers and Tumnus, whose histories reach further back.

Narrative Significance

Hwin’s brief appearance contributes to the scene’s vision of reunion across time. She is not given a separate speech or action in the gathering, but her presence beside Bree makes the welcome comprehensive: the old company includes its talking-animal friends as well as its kings, queens, and warriors. Her inclusion helps make the final assembly feel like the recovery of a shared community, not merely a royal reception.
