Puddleglum
The Last BattlePuddleglum, identified as the Marshwiggle, reappears among the company welcomed by Aslan beyond the stable door. Though the final scenes give him no new dialogue or independent action, his presence confirms that a familiar companion from an earlier Narnian adventure belongs among those gathered into the renewed world.
Return Among the Companions
Puddleglum is one of the figures Tirian sees arriving from another side of the garden. He appears alongside Glimfeather, King Rilian, Rilian’s mother, Caspian, and other remembered friends. The gathering reaches across Narnian history: old allies and heroes come together in a place larger than it first appeared, where reunion takes the form of greeting, handshaking, and revived jokes. Puddleglum’s inclusion places him within this community of remembered fellowship, rather than leaving him outside the book’s final restoration.
The Ending’s Larger Frame
His appearance follows the judgment at the stable door, where creatures who look on Aslan with love enter on his right, while those who turn away disappear into the shadow. The narrative then moves from that separation to the company assembled in the garden and, finally, to Aslan’s disclosure that the railway accident was real and that the children are dead in the Shadow-Lands. Puddleglum’s return thus belongs to an ending that treats death not as the cancellation of relationship but as passage into a reality where the old Narnian friendships are gathered again.
The children are told that their lives and adventures in Narnia were only the cover and title page of the Great Story, which continues without end. Puddleglum is not given a separate fate or speech in this final passage; his significance lies in the concrete fact of his presence among the reunions, as the story’s ending widens from the end of Narnia to a continuing life beyond it.
