Rescuing Jewel and Puzzle
The Last BattleRescuing Jewel and Puzzle is the turning point in which Tirian’s resistance obtains both its captive unicorn and tangible proof that the figure presented as Aslan is only a donkey in a lionskin. The rescue joins a tense, carefully staged approach to the Stable with Jill’s separate act of discovery inside it; once Puzzle is brought into the open, Tirian believes the Ape’s deception can finally be exposed to the Dwarfs.
Causes and Approach
Tirian and his companions approach the hilltop Stable under cover of darkness, moving through a wood whose unnatural quiet signals how fear has silenced ordinary Narnian life. Jill takes the lead in caution: when the trees thin and the group nears the hill, she signals the others to get down, then disappears into the grass without a sound. From that low position Tirian can see the Stable against the star-filled sky and a Calormene sentry sitting with his spear over his shoulder and his chin on his chest. Jill’s observation gives Tirian the information needed to advance, and the party creeps toward a clump of trees about forty feet from the guard.
The immediate aim is to reach Jewel, who is held behind the Stable while the group remains exposed to the sentry and to approaching danger. Tirian takes control of the approach and uses the guard as a means of getting to the captive without raising an alarm. The scene’s restraint is part of its stakes: the rescuers have to move silently through hostile ground, and a cry from either the guard or Jewel could undo the advantage Jill has secured.
Jewel Freed
After forcing the sentry to lead him around the back of the Stable, Tirian sees Jewel’s white shape in the darkness. He tells the unicorn not to neigh and asks how he has been tied. Jewel explains that all four legs are hobbled and that a bridle fastens him to a ring in the Stable wall. Tirian places the sentry with his back to the wall and directs Jewel to set his horn against the man’s breast, turning the captive’s weapon into a deterrent while the ropes are cut.
Tirian then binds the sentry with the cut ropes, stuffs his mouth with grass, and ties him up from scalp to chin so that he cannot make a sound. He lowers the man into a sitting position against the wall, acknowledging the harm done while insisting on the necessity of the act. With the guard silenced and Jewel free, the immediate rescue succeeds without an alarm. Tirian puts an arm around Jewel’s neck and kisses his nose; the two share a moment of great joy before returning quietly to the children.
Jill’s Discovery
The party initially treats the rescue as complete and starts back toward home. In the confusion of the dark, Eustace realizes Jill is missing. Her absence is not an accidental separation: while Tirian dealt with the sentry and freed Jewel, she had decided to inspect the Stable and see what was really inside. She crawled to it and drew the bolt; inside, it was pitch-black and smelled like an ordinary stable. After striking a light, she found no lion at all, only an old donkey with a bundle of lionskin tied to his back.
Jill drew her knife and ordered the donkey to come with her, although she later explains that the threat was unnecessary: Puzzle was tired of being shut inside and willing to leave. The discovery exposes the construction of the False Aslan deception in concrete form. The supposed lion is not a hidden or supernatural presence but Puzzle, costumed in a lionskin and confined in the Stable. Jill’s initiative therefore adds a second, more consequential success to the night’s operation: the rescuers return not only with Jewel, but with the alleged Aslan himself unmasked.
From Secrecy to Open Challenge
Eustace reproaches Jill for slipping away from the others, even as he admits that her action was extraordinarily brave. Tirian responds that she would have been punished for disobeying orders, leaving it unclear whether his tone is stern or amused. The exchange preserves the danger and disorder of the mission even as its outcome changes the balance: Jill has acted without permission, but her discovery gives the group what it could not have obtained by simply freeing Jewel.
Puzzle explains that the Ape told him Aslan wanted him to dress up, and that he trusted the Ape because he was not clever enough to know otherwise. He also reveals that he had been kept in the Stable, let out only briefly at night, and sometimes denied water. His account establishes Puzzle as a deceived and mistreated participant in the fraud, not its author. The lionskin that made him serve as a false sign of Aslan’s presence has concealed both the truth of the scheme and the donkey’s own confinement.
The approaching drumbeat had first urged the party to leave the dangerous area. Once Puzzle is with them, Tirian reverses course: rather than continue whispering and skulking, he laughs aloud and declares that they will meet the approaching Dwarfs and show them the donkey. The group’s mood lifts; even Puzzle raises his head and brays, a sound the Ape had forbidden for days. About thirty Dwarfs are marching along a rough road through Lantern Waste, carrying spades and mattocks, with armed Calormenes at the front and rear. Tirian steps out to confront the column and demand by whose orders the Dwarfs are being led. The rescue thus converts a secret operation into a direct challenge, because Puzzle’s presence appears to give Tirian the proof needed to expose the Ape’s plot.
Consequences and Significance
The episode’s two rescues answer different forms of captivity. Jewel is physically bound to a wall and guarded by a Calormene; Puzzle has been confined and made to impersonate the being whose authority the Ape invokes. Tirian and Jewel overcome the first confinement through force and careful silence, while Jill’s inspection reveals the second through direct observation. Their separate actions converge in the same result: the party can leave concealment carrying both the freed unicorn and the visible evidence behind the false appearance of Aslan.
That apparent evidentiary victory changes the resistance’s immediate method but does not erase the danger. The group moves from stealth to a public confrontation with Dwarfs who have arrived under armed Calormene escort, and Tirian’s confidence rests on their willingness to recognize what they see. The event therefore marks a reversal in the resistance’s position, not the final defeat of the deception: the fraud has been exposed to the rescuers, and Tirian intends to show it to others. Its decisive image is Puzzle emerging from the Stable in the lionskin, the disguise that had seemed to authorize the Ape’s rule now carried out into the open as evidence against it.
