A Captive in Magua’s Power

Cora Is Taken Again
Removal from safety
Magua brings Cora back from the Delaware settlement and leaves her in a cave while he organizes his warriors. Her confinement becomes the immediate objective of the rescue party.
Agency under coercion
Though physically controlled, Cora continues to resist Magua’s demands. Her resolve challenges the assumption that captivity can secure willing submission.
Refusal on the Ledge

A Choice Refused
The ultimatum
Magua offers Cora the wigwam or death. She refuses to choose under his terms and turns instead to prayer, asserting an inner freedom he cannot command.
An interrupted rescue
Uncas reaches the ledge, but the moment of confrontation brings no deliverance. A Huron warrior kills Cora before her allies can protect her.
Mourning and Burial

Cora’s Funeral
A communal tribute
Delaware women cover Cora with flowers and sing of her courage and beauty. Their rite recognizes her as a person whose place in the community exceeded that of a temporary guest.
Separate traditions meet
Munro, David, and the other survivors respond through Christian prayer and grief. The funeral allows different customs to coexist without making the loss less final.
