The Last of the Mohicans

The cavern is a natural passage beneath the mountain that turns the flight from the ruined Huron village into a confined pursuit. Its galleries briefly hide Magua and Cora from their pursuers, then carry the chase toward the mountain’s upper slope and the final confrontation.

Setting and Form

After the Hurons make their stand around the council lodge, Magua escapes with two surviving companions while the Delawares occupy themselves with the aftermath of victory. Uncas pursues him, followed by Hawkeye, Heyward, and David Gamut. Magua enters the mouth of the cavern, and the pursuers follow into its long, narrow entrance. The natural galleries and underground chambers make the route both a refuge for the fleeing party and an obstacle to those behind it.

The Pursuit Inside

The cavern’s passages are dark and intricate, and glimpses of the retreating Hurons become difficult to distinguish. The pursuing party briefly believes it has lost the trail; then a white robe appears at the far end of a passage leading up the mountain. Heyward recognizes Cora, and Uncas and Hawkeye press forward. The Hurons use Cora’s position among them to shield themselves, making a direct approach dangerous. Hawkeye urges the pursuers to close the distance, and they emerge from the cavern on the mountain’s side in time to follow the fugitives’ route uphill.

Narrative Significance

The cavern converts the pursuit from a battle among the village dwellings into a narrow passage where visibility, terrain, and proximity govern action. Its twisting interior interrupts the pursuers’ view, while the glimpse of Cora renews their effort and gives the chase a clear direction. The route does not end the pursuit: it carries the struggle out of the underground galleries and onto the hazardous ascent, where Uncas and Heyward continue after Magua.
