Ian

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

Ian is a member of the Watch whose knowledge of a hidden weapons cache shapes the response to the First Colony’s crisis. As the Colony’s authority falters, he directs Galen Strauss to recover the guns, turning an effort to restore control into a pursuit of Peter’s group.

Role in the Colony

Ian appears as a source of information and command within the Watch. Michael tells Alicia that Ian knows about the guns, and Alicia acknowledges that she had already suspected as much. The exchange establishes that knowledge of the weapons is not confined to the people planning to leave: Ian is aware of the cache as well.

The Crisis at the Gate

The Colony’s unrest follows the departure of Peter and his companions. From Galen’s perspective, people gathered at the gate, demanding that Peter’s party be killed while insisting that Mausami be brought back. The crowd’s anger turned against Mar Curtis and Elton, who were taken to the Wall and thrown over it. Sanjay was absent from the gathering, being in the Infirmary, where Ian reported that he was babbling and weeping.

Order to Recover the Guns

Ian eventually gave the order for a party to go after the departing group. Galen, then the only surviving Second Captain, understood the mission as an attempt to preserve the appearance that the Watch remained in charge. Ian took him aside and disclosed the cache: twelve crates of guns hidden behind a wall in a storage room. He told Galen that recovering the weapons was the priority, while leaving the question of Mausami to Galen himself.

Significance

Ian’s brief appearances connect the Colony’s political disorder to its military resources. He knows where the weapons are, directs Galen toward them, and thereby helps set the pursuit in motion. The contrast between the crowd’s demand for revenge and Ian’s practical focus on the guns shows a crisis in which the Watch’s authority is already reduced to maintaining its appearance and securing control of the means of force.
