Sunny Greenberg

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

Sunny Greenberg is a Watcher in the First Colony who moves from enforcing the colony’s authority at the lockup to joining its defense when the Wall comes under attack. Her disappearance during that battle makes her one of the people the colony cannot account for, and leaves her fate uncertain.

Identity and Role

Sunny serves in the Watch, the organization responsible for the colony’s defenses. At the lockup, she challenges Dale for taking orders from Alicia, pointing out that Alicia is neither a captain nor a Watcher. Her objection establishes Sunny as someone attentive to rank and official responsibility, even as Alicia’s presence unsettles the ordinary arrangement of authority.

The exchange is not simply a dispute over titles. Alicia responds without taking offense and turns the conversation toward a girl holding a cross, asking whether she can use it. When the girl claims to have the highest scores in her grade, Alicia says she has effectively been promoted. Sunny is present as this informal reassignment takes shape, a moment in which immediate need begins to overtake formal status.

From the Lockup to the Wall

Sunny has left her post at the lockup by the time the colony’s power fails and the Wall is attacked. The available account says she went to join the fight. That movement connects her earlier concern with who is authorized to give orders to a more immediate question: where a Watcher is needed when the colony’s defenses are breached.

At the lockup, Alicia looks at Dale and Sunny in a way Peter understands as making clear that the matter is personal, then leads him away. Sunny’s later departure from the post does not resolve the tension in that room; instead, the account places her within a colony whose responsibilities and loyalties are being tested by a larger emergency. The narrative gives no further detail about her reasons for leaving the lockup or about what happened to her along the route to the Wall.

The Attack and Disappearance

The assault follows a power failure that lasts less than three minutes. A surge flips the main breaker while Michael is away from the panel, briefly tending a vent on the battery stack. Once the lights go out, the Wall is breached by a mass of virals, which come down the catwalk and engage the defenders in a melee. The attack is notable not only for its scale but for its apparent tactical organization, unlike the earlier assaults the colonists had witnessed.

Three Watchers are confirmed killed before the attacking group is driven back: Gar Phillips, Aidan Strauss, and Kip Darrell, a fifteen-year-old runner who had first reported the gathering at the fireline. Sunny, who had left the lockup to join the fight, is not accounted for. Ian reports her missing and presumed lost, but the narration emphasizes that Old Chou’s likely disappearance has no direct confirmation; Sunny’s own fate likewise receives no on-page resolution in this account. No virals are reported killed in the engagement.

Significance and Uncertainty

Sunny’s disappearance becomes part of the attack’s wider human cost. At the meeting afterward, Peter sees survivors grieving for spouses, children, and parents; the loss binds them together while setting them apart from those who have not suffered the same bereavement. Sunny’s parents, Hodd and Lisa Greenberg, are among those present. Their appearance places her absence within the colony’s family losses, even though the account does not state what they know or how they respond individually.

The contrast between Sunny’s sharply defined role at the lockup and her unresolved status after the battle captures the crisis’s erosion of ordinary certainty. Before the attack, rank and post provide recognizable boundaries: Alicia is not a Watcher, and Sunny is assigned to the lockup. Once the lights fail, Sunny leaves that post to fight, and after the violence the colony can say only that she is missing and presumed lost. The narrative preserves that distinction between disappearance and confirmed death rather than supplying an answer the characters do not have.
