First Colony gathering turns into a mob attack

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

The First Colony gathering turns into a mob attack as fear and grief over recent deaths harden into collective blame. When the crowd demands that Amy and Caleb be expelled, Alicia takes responsibility for the danger, drawing its attention onto herself. The Watch disperses the mob and imposes martial law, but Alicia is arrested for treason; her intervention buys time for Peter’s companions while revealing the fragility of the Colony’s order.

Causes and Escalation

The gathering takes place amid fear that an organized threat has reached the Colony and anger at the Watch for failing to act. Sam Chou turns uncertainty into accusation: Caleb let Amy in, he insists, and the deaths that followed make the pair responsible. He calls for them to be put outside the walls. The charge is not established as fact in the scene; it is a claim made persuasive by fear and repeated in the crowd.

The demand spreads by repetition. One voice answers Sam, then another, until the call to expel Amy and Caleb becomes a chorus. Peter recognizes that the gathering is nearing violence and that the ordinary appearance of order has fallen away. When Ian’s attempt to quiet the assembly fails, Peter concludes that Amy must be taken out of danger, with Caleb’s fate now bound to hers.

Alicia Takes the Blame

Alicia pushes through the crowd, climbs onto a table, and calls for everyone to listen. Instead of allowing Amy to remain the assembly’s target, she declares that she is responsible. Alicia says the attackers are after her, not Amy, and connects the danger to her own earlier decision to burn the library: it had been a nest, and she had led the attackers back to the Colony. She offers herself as the person the crowd should put out.

Her intervention redirects the assembly’s attention but does not calm it. Milo Darrell lunges toward the table, and the movement becomes a rush of pushing and shoving. The crowd surges forward, separating people and overwhelming the table. Peter is caught in the press as he tries to reach Alicia; he sees her on the ground, shielding herself, while Jacob Curtis is also knocked down. Peter draws his knife as he nears the crowd around her.

The Watch Restores Control

The Watch arrives from the direction of the gate, led by Ben and Galen with crosses, along with Dale Levine, Vivian Chou, Hollis Wilson, and others. They form a line between the table and the crowd, and their arrival makes people retreat. Ian orders everyone home and announces that the Household is suspended, martial law is in effect, and an immediate curfew has begun.

The separation of the crowd leaves Alicia exposed. Peter reaches her, and she mouths a single instruction: “Go.” He withdraws into the assembly. Galen and Hollis then help Alicia to her feet while Ian takes her blades. Peter understands that her decision to draw the crowd’s fury onto herself has diverted it from Amy and bought them time; Alicia’s arrest is now the price of restoring control.

Arrest and Consequences

Ian publicly arrests Alicia for treason. The accusation comes as a shout from the crowd calls for her expulsion, while Ian insists that people go home and warns that anyone outside or carrying a weapon may be arrested or fired upon. The Watch leads Alicia away as Peter watches, feeling estranged from the people around him. The episode ends not with a reconciliation but with the assembly subdued by armed authority and a public arrest.

The scene shows fear changing form: an uncertain threat becomes a confident accusation, and accusation becomes a demand for expulsion and then physical violence. Alicia’s act creates a momentary alternative to scapegoating Amy and Caleb, but it does not erase the crowd’s anger or protect Alicia from the Colony’s response. The Watch stops the immediate attack; martial law and Alicia’s arrest make clear that the community’s order has been preserved through force rather than restored trust.
