The defense of Lacey’s house

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

The defense of Lacey’s house is the group’s last attempt to hold a home against the virals pursuing them through the mountain woods. The struggle turns a brief refuge into a siege: Alicia directs the defense, Michael receives a pistol, and Peter’s companions take positions at the windows and door. When the barriers fail, the group retreats inside, but the attackers press on; Alicia is bitten, and Peter carries her away from the entrance as the fight continues.

Arrival Under Pursuit

The sequence begins with Michael, Sara, and Alicia racing toward the sound of gunfire. After cresting a ridge, they see a house below, with horses outside and Sara and Alicia waving from its doorway. The pursuers are close behind: the creatures emerge among the trees, and the three run down the embankment and into the house. Greer and Hollis are already inside, struggling to move a tall chest of drawers.

The house offers shelter, but not much time. Michael reports that the creatures are directly behind them. The defenders wedge the bureau against the door, an improvised obstruction that Michael recognizes as unlikely to hold for long. Their situation is defined by this gap between refuge and security: they have reached a structure, but the threat has arrived with them.

Alicia Organizes the Defense

Alicia tests whether the group can use the windows, but another cupboard is too heavy to move. Instead of trying to strengthen every opening, she assigns people to cover them. She presses a pistol into Michael’s hands, sends Greer and Hollis to the bedroom window, and orders the others to divide their attention between the door and the remaining windows. She also tells the person identified as Circuit to watch the chimney, anticipating that the virals might come for the horses first.

The placement of defenders turns the house into a set of vulnerable approaches rather than a secure barricade. Everyone takes a position, and the warning from the bedroom that the attackers are coming marks the end of preparation. Alicia’s instructions establish her as the person directing the immediate response; the group’s survival now depends on holding several openings at once.

The Breach and Retreat

The virals strike the doors and windows simultaneously, breaking through the house’s outer defenses. Peter, bracing the bureau with his shoulder, is knocked backward into Amy. The group fires from several positions: Hollis and Greer from the bedroom, and Alicia, Michael, Sara, and Amy from elsewhere in the house. The attack makes the defenders’ coordinated arrangement necessary, but it also overwhelms it.

Alicia calls for a fallback when the door begins to give way. Peter takes Amy by the arm and pulls her into the bedroom, where Hollis remains at the window and Greer is down beside the bed. Greer insists that his injury came from glass, while the gunfire continues. Alicia replaces her empty magazine and prepares the group to hold this interior position; the defense has shifted from stopping the attack at the entrance to making a stand deeper in the house.

Alicia Is Lost to the Attack

The front door finally gives way. Alicia, nearest the bedroom curtain, turns and fires as a viral comes through. Peter later remembers her fall not as a single blur but as a series of separate details: the last shell casings striking the floor, the smoke, her empty magazine dropping as she reaches for another, and the attacker closing the distance before she can draw her blade. The sequence makes the reversal plain: the person organizing the defense is caught without a loaded weapon at the moment the attackers enter.

Hollis kills the viral at close range. Peter then pulls Alicia away from the doorway and tries to stop the bleeding while Amy and Sara crouch against the wall. Another attacker comes through the curtain; Peter fires his remaining two rounds, missing once and hitting with the second. Alicia is still breathing, but Peter holds her tightly as the struggle continues around them. The defense has not ended in safety: it has become a retreat under attack, with Alicia’s infection changing the stakes for everyone in the room.

A Home Turned into a Battlefield

The house’s domestic objects become temporary defenses: the bureau is pushed against the door, the cupboard is too heavy to move, and the bedroom becomes the group’s fallback position. These efforts buy moments rather than security. The scene’s movement—from arrival at a visible refuge, to assigned posts, to a forced retreat—shows how quickly shelter can lose its protective meaning when the attackers arrive together at every opening.

The wider story repeatedly shows fear becoming collective action, sometimes protective and sometimes dangerous. At the First Colony, Sam Chou blames Amy and Caleb for deaths and calls for them to be put outside; the crowd takes up his demand in a chorus. Here, by contrast, the group’s urgent coordination is directed toward keeping one another alive, even as the house’s defenses fail. The contrast does not make the stand successful: Alicia is infected, and Peter’s attempt to shield her cannot restore the safety the house initially seemed to promise.
