The failed expeditionary raid on the viral mine
The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)The failed expeditionary raid on the viral mine is the turning point that converts a summer-long search into a costly military disaster. Curtis Vorhees’s forces find the suspected nest and prepare to destroy it with explosives lowered into the shaft, but the ground collapses during the operation and the virals attack from multiple directions. The survivors return without General Vorhees or Alicia Donadio, and the loss of forty-six men forces the garrison to prepare for departure rather than mount an immediate search.
