Death
The Rime of the Ancient MarinerDeath is the skeletal player aboard the Spectre-bark who casts dice with Life-in-Death for the fate of the Ancient Mariner’s crew. His victory over the Ancient Mariner establishes the supernatural terms of the Mariner’s ordeal: he survives, but under the distinct sentence of Life-in-Death.
Appearance and Arrival
Death appears as the naked hulk that comes alongside the Mariner’s ship. The Mariner’s questions about the spectral vessel and its occupants establish Death as one of two uncanny figures: he is paired with the woman identified as Life-in-Death, rather than appearing alone.
The Game for the Crew
Death and Life-in-Death cast dice as the sun sinks and the stars emerge. Their game makes the crew’s fate depend on a contest between the two figures. Life-in-Death announces that she has won; the result assigns the Ancient Mariner to her, while Death’s presence frames the outcome as a division of lives rather than an ordinary encounter with mortality.
Role in the Mariner’s Fate
Death functions as the losing player in the contest that determines the Mariner’s punishment. He does not speak in the scene; the woman’s announcement supplies the result. The episode distinguishes Death from Life-in-Death and makes the Mariner’s survival part of a supernatural sentence, rather than a rescue from danger. Death’s role is brief but decisive: the dice game turns the voyage into an ordeal whose consequences extend beyond the moment of the contest.
