War, Duty, and Neighborliness
The Screwtape LettersThis flow traces how wartime pressure shifts the patient from self-focused anticipation toward service to people nearby.

Uncertain Call-Up

Imagined Futures
Suspense
The patient does not know whether military service will be required. This uncertainty invites him to picture multiple futures and dwell on what might happen to him.
Present Duty
Screwtape’s counterstrategy is to obscure the trial already at hand: patiently bearing suspense. The present fear can matter more than imagined disasters.
Public Causes

Politics as a Temptation
Partisanship
Wormwood is advised to encourage an extreme political identity, whether patriotic or pacifist. A cause can become more important than prayer, sacrament, or ordinary kindness.
Inversion
Faith becomes a tool for advancing a worldly position instead of a guide to obedience. The danger lies in the order of commitment, not merely in the side chosen.
Approaching Raids

Danger Comes Near
Changed Attention
The patient becomes occupied with defense work and the needs of neighbors. His worldly hopes recede as immediate responsibilities take priority.
Unintended Growth
Screwtape fears that this outward attention and growing dependence on God will make the patient harder to reclaim. Danger can clarify obligations instead of merely producing panic.
Service Under Fire

Duty Despite Fear
Conduct
The patient experiences intense fear but performs his assigned work, perhaps exceeding what was required. His behavior contradicts his own harsh judgment of himself.
Neighborliness
The raid is not presented as a political triumph. Its moral significance lies in the patient’s action and concern amid shared danger.
A Final Wartime Moment

The Limit of Service
Mortality
The patient’s life ends in the war before long-term wartime fatigue can wear him down. Screwtape had hoped for decades of attrition, but receives no such opportunity.
Resolution
The war’s physical violence becomes the threshold to Heaven. The patient’s final fate resists the demons’ attempt to make earthly survival the ultimate good.
