13 October

The Secret of Chimneys

13 October is the date of the novel’s climactic reckoning at Chimneys, when Anthony Cade moves from guarded disclosure to a direct attempt to expose Prince Michael’s murderer. Its significance lies not simply in marking the day’s events: the date gathers together the consequences of Anthony’s earlier concealments, the investigation’s shifting evidence, and the final signal that directs the assembled company toward the library.

The day’s gathering at Chimneys

The chapter marks the scene with the heading “THE 13TH OF OCTOBER (continued),” and the council chamber’s clock strikes nine as the household gathers again. Lord Caterham’s weary remark that everyone has returned like a flock captures the tension between the house’s ordinary social routine and the mystery keeping its occupants together. The date provides a specific temporal anchor for the final sequence rather than a detached calendar reference.

Anthony arrives and apologizes to Lord Caterham for the trouble he has caused, adding that he believes the mystery will be cleared up that night. Lord Caterham is readily mollified; he has always felt a secret liking for Anthony. The exchange establishes a moment of expectation before the investigation’s last turn: Anthony offers confidence, while the host’s response shows how personal regard persists amid the uncertainty.

Concealment and the cost of the preceding day

The urgency of the 13th follows from the danger Anthony recognizes in his own recent conduct. He has become entangled in two crimes within twenty-four hours: he deliberately disposed of Giuseppe’s body, obstructing justice, and then arrived at Chimneys as a second crime was being committed. Facing Lord Caterham and George Lomax, he decides to tell the truth with one small alteration and one serious omission. His account begins with his meeting with James McGrath in Bulawayo, but it is not yet a complete confession.

The evidence at Chimneys has also unsettled the account of Prince Michael’s death. When Superintendent Battle tells Anthony that the middle window was found open, Anthony sees that this changes the possibilities: someone inside might have unlatched it after he left, making the murder appear to be an outside intrusion and implicating him, or his own account might be false. Battle responds that nobody will leave the house until he has finished investigating. The date’s final confrontation is thus prepared by a case in which physical details and competing explanations continue to reshape suspicion.

The investigation turns toward disclosure

Anthony eventually explains why he has chosen to share information with Battle. He admires the superintendent’s abilities and believes that withholding what he knows has hampered the investigation. He had kept silent for Virginia Revel’s sake; now that her letters have been proved unrelated to the case, he considers suspicion of her complicity untenable. He also acknowledges that her claim to have paid Giuseppe merely to suppress the letters might be difficult for a jury to believe. Battle agrees that juries can lack imagination. Their exchange shows that disclosure is not simply a change of heart: it follows a change in the evidence and removes, in Anthony’s view, the reason for protecting Virginia through silence.

The inquiry’s attention also falls on the possibility that Anthony himself is King Victor. M. Lemoine has requested King Victor’s fingerprints and Bertillon measurements from France, identifying the fugitive as the so-called Captain O’Neill and proposing to compare the records with Anthony. Anthony immediately understands the test Lemoine intends to make. The date’s gathering therefore places Anthony under scrutiny even as he is preparing to direct suspicion elsewhere.

The signal and its consequence

At the decisive moment, a whistle sounds from the terrace. Anthony springs up and says that the murderer of Prince Michael is in the library; the signal is the one for which he has been waiting. He leads the others out through the window and around the terrace to the library, where he finds the window yielding to his touch and quietly draws aside the curtain so the group can look inside. The date culminates not in an abstract promise to solve the mystery but in a concrete change of scene: the gathered observers are brought to the place where Anthony expects the murderer to be.

As a narrative time-marker, 13 October gives the investigation’s accumulated strands a single point of convergence. The chapter’s return to the date, the clock striking nine, Anthony’s announcement, and the whistle form a progression from expectation to action. The day’s importance rests on that progression: secrets withheld for protection, evidence that has complicated the case, and the scrutiny directed at Anthony all meet at the moment he leads the company toward the library.
