Count Stylptitch's rose badge

The Secret of Chimneys

Count Stylptitch’s rose badge is a small emblem with a decisive double function: it identifies a detail from the late Count’s memoirs and ultimately helps Anthony Cade locate the hidden object in the rose garden. Its meaning first points toward a false lead in the library, then toward the actual hiding place.

Description and Context

At a dinner recalled in Count Stylptitch’s memoirs, the guests wore badges representing flowers. Count Stylptitch’s badge bore a rose, matching the curious device discovered in a cavity in a secret passage at Chimneys. The badge therefore linked the physical clue in the house to the Count’s account of the flower dinner.

From Emblem to Cipher Clue

Anthony uses the rose badge to interpret the coded message and the sequence of objects found in the passage: buttons, the letter E, and knitting, all arranged in rows. Books also stand in rows, and the library catalogue contains a volume titled The Life of the Earl of Richmond. From these associations, Anthony proposes that the numbers in the cipher indicate shelves and books, leading to a dummy volume or a cavity behind a particular book.

That library explanation is not the solution but a deliberate invention. Anthony uses it to draw the impostor into the library while Mr Fish watches the terrace. The badge’s first apparent meaning thus supports a trap rather than revealing the final hiding place.

The Rose Garden and Its Significance

On Monday afternoon, Anthony recognizes that the device retains its original meaning: a rose. He goes directly to the rose garden, where Mr Fish has independently reached the same conclusion. Anthony gives precise directions from the sundial: seven paces forward, eight to the left, and three to the right lead to bushes of bright red roses called Richmond. The house has been searched, but the garden has not been dug over; Anthony proposes a search there the following morning.

The badge turns a repeated image into a chain of evidence. Its rose design links the memoir, the secret-passage device, the cipher’s reference to Richmond, and the named roses in the garden. The contrast between the conspicuous searches inside Chimneys and the untouched ground outside makes the emblem more than a clue to a hiding place: it is the means by which Anthony redirects the investigation from a plausible constructed answer to the overlooked physical location.
