Fauns

The Silver Chair

Fauns are one of the nonhuman peoples of Narnia, recognized by Jill among the kingdom’s courtiers and later encountered in the community that celebrates the travelers’ return from beneath the earth. Their appearance in both scenes places them within Narnia’s social world and its public response to the recovery of Prince Rilian.

Identity and Place in Narnia

At the royal gathering Jill sees Fauns among a crowd that includes satyrs, centaurs, Dwarfs, and animals capable of speech and thought. Their presence among the courtiers shows that Narnia’s court is not exclusively human: it brings together peoples with different forms and kinds of life. Jill recognizes Fauns from pictures, though the wider crowd still surprises her with the variety and scale of its inhabitants.

The Great Snow Dance

When Jill emerges from the underground passage, she finds Fauns and Dryads dancing in the moonlit snow. Their dance has intricate steps and figures, accompanied by music from four fiddles, three flutes, and a drum. The gathering’s snowballs are thrown through the dance in time with the music, turning winter play into a carefully coordinated performance. For Jill, the scene confirms that she and her companions have reached the surface world and returned to Narnia.

Aid to the Rescued Travelers

The dancers and other Narnians initially do not know where Jill’s voice is coming from, but they hurry to help when they find her at the opening in the hillside. Jill tells them that three others, including Prince Rilian, remain below. While Dwarfs fetch tools and begin digging, a Faun goes to a nearby cave to bring Jill a hot drink. Later, Fauns help carry the excavated earth away in small barrows, contributing practical labor to the rescue rather than merely witnessing the celebration.

Community and Narrative Significance

The Fauns’ roles connect Narnia’s festive life with its readiness to act for its own people. The same community that performs the Great Snow Dance gathers around the opening, equips itself to dig, and welcomes the travelers into the moonlit world above. When Rilian finally emerges, the crowd recognizes him as the rightful prince and responds with collective joy. The Fauns are part of that assembled Narnian society, whose celebration becomes the visible consequence of the quest’s success.
