Harfang

The Silver Chair

Harfang is the northern stronghold of the dangerous giants who become allies in the Witch’s attempt to conquer Narnia. Its importance is revealed after Prince Rilian’s rescue: the older Beasts and Dwarfs understand that the giants were connected to the Witch’s scheme, which would have used Rilian to rule his own country on her behalf.

Place in the Witch’s Scheme

After the adventure, the assembled Beasts and Dwarfs piece together the plot behind Rilian’s captivity. The Witch had dug beneath Narnia and intended to break out and rule it through Rilian, whom she would make king in name but keep as her slave in reality. They also recognize that she was in league and friendship with the dangerous giants of Harfang. Harfang is therefore not merely a northern destination but part of the political and military threat gathered around the underground invasion.

Narrative Significance

The revelation places Harfang within a recurring pattern of attempted conquest. The oldest Dwarf concludes that Northern Witches pursue the same ends in every age, though each devises a different plan to achieve them. Harfang’s association with the Witch’s present scheme connects the giants’ danger to that longer continuity: their alliance serves a design aimed at Narnia’s rule, even though Rilian himself had not understood that the country intended for him was his own.
