A Prisoner’s Confession

A Confession Before Release
The story he tells
Gustav Rover confesses to Sonny Lofthus that he helped Hugo Nestor imprison and traffic women. When a Belarusian girl escaped and Nestor ordered Rover to finish her off, Rover could not pull the trigger, but he stood by while Nestor killed her.
The cost of silence
Rover admits that he later asked to leave Nestor’s criminal operation, then accepted a prison sentence on an older weapons charge partly because prison seemed safer than the outside world. His account shows that refusing one act of violence did not undo his complicity in the system around it.
A fragile hope
On the eve of release, Rover does not know whether Nestor will let him live. He asks for a blessing not because he has become religious, but because he wants to believe he can begin again. His confession marks a tentative first step toward a life not governed by fear.
The Hidden Pistol

A Dangerous Gift
A weapon disguised
Rover gives Sonny a gold-plated lighter that is actually a concealed pistol. He explains that he made two such weapons years earlier for a client who wanted a gun that would not look like one, and that he kept this one for protection against Nestor.
An unexpected inheritance
Rover says he no longer needs the pistol now that he is being released. He leaves Sonny the weapon, cigarettes, and his workshop card, presenting the gift as both practical protection and an invitation to seek legitimate help repairing a motorbike.
Consequences beyond the cell
The pistol gives Sonny a means to threaten others, but its presence also links Rover’s technical skill to the violence he wants to escape. The exchange becomes a small turning point: Rover hands away the tool he once kept for survival, while Sonny gains an instrument that will shape events outside prison.
A Failed Escape

An Escape That Stops Short
The plan
Sonny persuades Johannes Halden to take a prison officer’s uniform and help him get through the prison’s shift-change routine. Sonny supplies the concealed pistol Rover left behind, and Johannes uses it to force the control-room staff to open the doors.
The prison holds
The plan fails at a fingerprint-controlled door. Johannes is not authorised to pass through it, and the prison’s layered security stops him before he reaches the outside. His attempted escape creates a distraction, but Sonny has already used the opening to leave in disguise.
Rover’s part in the chain
Rover does not plan the escape, yet the weapon he surrendered becomes its means of coercion. His gift has helped Sonny break free, though it has also exposed Johannes to punishment and made Rover’s effort to sever ties with Nestor part of a wider, dangerous chain of choices.
A Request for Weapons

The Workshop Door Opens
An unexpected visitor
Sonny finds Rover at his motorcycle workshop and asks for an Uzi. Rover has seen the news about Sonny’s escape and understands that assisting him could bring the police and The Twin’s people to the workshop.
A choice against safety
Rover warns Sonny that The Twin will be looking for him, then offers him a chance to leave immediately. Sonny does not conceal the danger and does not threaten Rover into agreement; he leaves the decision to him.
A tentative alliance
Rover chooses not to send Sonny away. He suggests closing the garage door, accepting that his desire for a clean start has not erased his loyalty to a young man who is pursuing the truth. The decision risks bringing the old world back to him, but it is also a conscious act of support rather than a return to making weapons for profit.
The Twin’s Retaliation

The Past Catches Up
A confrontation at the workshop
The Twin confronts Rover for supplying Sonny with a weapon. He treats Rover’s choice as betrayal, not as a former criminal’s attempt to help someone escape the same network of violence.
The price of changing sides
Rover is restrained while The Twin’s men hold him at gunpoint. The threat is especially stark because Rover had previously tried to leave Nestor’s organisation and believed that keeping his distance might protect his future.
An unfinished second chance
Rover sees his repaired Harley-Davidson but does not get to start it and hear the work he has completed. His fate makes the cost of his late attempt at moral independence explicit: he has chosen a different side, but the criminal power he once served still has the means to reach him.
