Uzi
The SonThe Uzi is the submachine gun Sonny Lofthus obtains from Rover and later uses in two pivotal confrontations. First it gives Sonny the firepower to break out of a house where the Twin’s men have cornered him; later, during the planned confrontation with the Twin, it helps him and Simon Kefas survive an ambush. The weapon’s passage from a motorcycle workshop into these conflicts links Rover’s choice to arm Sonny with the gang’s retaliation and the final struggle for survival.
Acquisition and significance
Sonny arrives at Rover’s Motorcycle Workshop with a yellowing business card and reminds Rover that the address was correct and that Rover had said he could get him an Uzi. Rover recognizes Sonny from newspaper coverage and television, and understands that the man before him is no longer simply the boy he remembers from Staten Maximum Security Prison. When Rover says that Sonny has taken out Nestor, the consequences of supplying him are plain: the request comes from someone already in conflict with the criminal organization.
The Uzi therefore enters the story not as neutral equipment but as a choice Rover makes despite the danger. The Twin later explains that Rover used to modify weapons for him, retired to repair motorcycles, and then gave the Uzi to someone he knew had killed several of the Twin’s men. He accepts that Rover preferred motorcycle work to making guns, but not that Rover would arm Sonny. In the Twin’s account, violence and brutality, like displays of wealth, are instruments for motivating subordinates and discouraging opponents; the Uzi’s transfer challenges that system directly.
The escape from the house
At Yngve Morsand’s house, the Uzi turns Sonny’s arrival into an armed confrontation. Bo hears him enter through a side doorway from the garage and realizes that the locked garage has not kept him out; Sonny has apparently come from the forest. The weapon in Sonny’s hands is unmistakable enough to make Bo’s discovery of his own limited ability to predict the newcomer’s actions suddenly consequential. Sonny asks where Yngve is, and Bo answers that he is there while turning toward a microphone, alerting someone else to Sonny’s presence.
Sonny notices that Bo is speaking to another person. Before he can get further, Stan bursts through the hallway door with a pistol. Bo reaches for his Ruger as Sonny fires the Uzi, forcing both men to shelter behind a sofa. The burst shatters the window and damages the room, but the tactical result is more important than the destruction: Bo recognizes that the machine gun gives Sonny an advantage over the two pistols. When Bo calls on Stan to take Sonny out and receives no reply, the exchange has already exposed how quickly the defenders’ apparent control can fail.
Bo then sees the escape unfold through the broken window. Sonny’s car bursts out of the garage as Nubbe and Evgeni try to stop it at the gate. They fire at the vehicle, but it continues forward, strikes Evgeni, breaks through the gate and part of the fence, and cuts across a wheat field before rejoining the gravel path. The Uzi is the weapon that has opened Sonny’s way out of the house; the car, driven in darkness without headlights, carries that escape beyond the men waiting at the property. Bo orders the others to pursue him before he reaches town, making the flight the immediate consequence of Sonny’s successful break from their control.
The Twin’s grievance and the weapon’s return
The Uzi’s significance reaches beyond the escape: its transfer becomes part of the Twin’s case against Rover. Explaining his methods, the Twin describes luxury and public symbols of success as tools for keeping his workers motivated and reminding rivals of his power. He extends the same logic to violence, which he says can compel payment and discourage opposition. Against that rationale, Rover’s decision to give Sonny the weapon is a direct challenge. The Twin can accept that Rover left weapon-making to repair motorcycles; what he cannot accept is that Rover armed a man who had already killed several of his men. The gun thus carries the consequence of Rover’s choice into the Twin’s own confrontation with Sonny.
Use in the final confrontation
The Uzi returns in the planned confrontation with the Twin, where Simon Kefas and Sonny have prepared for the possibility that they will need to seize weapons and act within a narrow opening. At the Bismarck Hotel, Simon has explained that the temporary paralysis caused by the stun grenade will last at most two seconds, and the pair have practised taking weapons and firing. When the grenade goes off, Simon shoots the blond man holding Sonny, and Sonny takes the Uzi. The weapon then gives Sonny the means to fire on the Twin’s men as they recover, while Simon turns toward the Twin. The scene completes the gun’s movement from Rover’s decision to arm Sonny to its use in the final struggle: it is no longer only an instrument of escape, but part of a rehearsed attempt by Sonny and Simon to survive the ambush.
Use in the final confrontation
The Uzi returns at the Bismarck Hotel, where Sonny Lofthus and Simon Kefas have prepared for the brief opening created by a stun grenade. Simon has told Sonny they will have no more than two seconds before the temporary paralysis lifts, and they have practised taking weapons and firing. When the grenade goes off, Simon shoots the blond man holding Sonny; Sonny seizes the Uzi and fires at the Twin’s men as they recover. Two men are already down, and a third is struck before he can draw his weapon. Simon turns toward the Twin, only to find that he has moved from his chair. The Uzi’s role has shifted from securing Sonny’s escape to enabling the pair’s rehearsed attempt to survive the ambush.
The Uzi’s place in the final confrontation
At the Bismarck Hotel, the Uzi becomes part of a rehearsed response to the Twin’s ambush. Simon Kefas has explained that the stun grenade will leave their opponents temporarily paralyzed for no more than two seconds, and Sonny Lofthus and Simon practise seizing weapons and firing during that narrow interval. When the grenade goes off, Simon shoots the blond man holding Sonny; Sonny takes the Uzi and fires at the Twin’s men as they recover. Two are already down, and a third is hit before he can draw his weapon. Simon turns toward the Twin, but the man has left his chair. In this confrontation, the gun’s function has shifted: first it enabled Sonny to escape a house controlled by the Twin’s men; here it supports a coordinated attempt by Sonny and Simon to survive an ambush.
