Lake Michigan

The Time Traveler's Wife

Lake Michigan becomes the setting of a sudden public alarm when a police search for Henry draws Clare to Dempster Street Pier before dawn. The episode turns on the gap between what the authorities believe and what Clare knows: they are searching for a body, while she waits with Henry’s clothes and tries to account for his absence.

The Search at Dempster Street Pier

At five o’clock on an already hot, overcast morning, Clare watches police divers swim out into the lake. Emergency vehicles line Sheridan Road, and firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and reporters gather around the pier. Holding Henry’s clothes, she hears that an officer saw him jump from the pier in the beam of a police-car searchlight. The scale of the response makes the mistaken belief that Henry has drowned into a spectacle, with Clare at its center.

Captain Michels asks whether Henry might have wanted to take his own life and whether he left a note. Clare denies that he did and offers the explanation that she was asleep and he must have gone swimming without waking her. Her account conceals what she knows about Henry’s unusual circumstances; as she tries to make it sound plausible, the possibility that he may be in the water remains urgent.

Henry’s Return

Clare hears a splash near shore and calls out that Henry is there. He begins to stand in the water, notices her, then ducks down again and swims toward the pier. The search for a presumed drowning victim is abruptly reversed: Henry is alive, and the people gathered to recover his body now watch him approach.

Clare explains that the police thought he had drowned and had been searching for two hours. Henry appears worried but also amused by the disturbance. When Captain Michels asks whether he is Henry DeTamble, he confirms his identity and asks permission to leave the water. He swims toward shore as the others walk alongside on the pier, then dresses in the clothes Clare has brought and waits calmly for the police to decide what to do.

Aftermath and Significance

The incident ends without a death, but it leaves Clare caught between irritation and relief. She wants to kiss Henry and also feels angry with him; when he puts an arm around her, their physical closeness becomes a quiet counterpoint to the assembled police. The Evanston officers and those from Morton Grove and Skokie question him, while Clare notes that Chicago police would already know him and would arrest him. Henry explains that he did not respond to an officer’s instruction because he was wearing earplugs.

Lake Michigan is therefore more than a backdrop to a mistaken emergency. Its water separates Henry from the people on the pier for the duration of the search, then becomes the route by which he returns to Clare and to public view. The episode makes the instability of appearances concrete: a witnessed jump is taken for a suicide attempt, a search for a body ends with Henry standing alive on shore, and Clare must answer the authorities while keeping the explanation she gives them incomplete.
