Add It Up

The Time Traveler's Wife

“Add It Up” is the song performed at the Violent Femmes concert as Henry and Clare move from watching the crowd to dancing within it. Its driving rhythm turns their attention into bodily motion, making the scene’s intimacy something enacted through shared movement rather than explained in words.

Performance and Setting

The crowd chants “Add it up! Add it up!” and the Femmes answer with vigorous playing. Henry moves with the bass line while he and Clare stand just outside the mosh pit, between dancers colliding at high speed and others shaking their hips and flailing their arms. The song belongs to a packed, turbulent space, but the couple find their own way of moving within it.

Dance and Physical Connection

As they dance, Clare describes the music as sound that seizes her spine and moves her feet, hips, and shoulders without consulting her mind. The song’s force is therefore presented as immediate and physical, preceding conscious interpretation. Henry watches her as they dance; when she raises her arms, he catches her around the waist and she leaps up, briefly seeing the dance floor from above before he sets her down.

They alternate between touching and dancing apart. Sweat streams down Clare, and Henry’s hair blurs as he shakes his head, his sweat reaching her. The changing distance between them gives the dance its shape: contact and separation recur within the same shared movement. “Add It Up” thus marks a moment of closeness sustained not by stillness but by rhythm, exertion, and continual adjustment.
