Berlin
The Time Traveler's WifeBerlin is a Chicago nightclub whose blacked-out windows and disco sound conceal a packed Ladies’ Night crowd. Clare enters with Celia Attley and finds Ingrid Carmichel waiting at a table; the meeting quickly becomes a confrontation, making the club a place where Henry’s former relationship intrudes directly into Clare’s present.
Setting and Entrance
Celia draws Clare south along Halstead toward Belmont, promising that Ingrid has been curious to meet her. They pass tattoo parlors, Indian restaurants, leather shops, and storefront churches, then walk beneath the elevated train to Berlin. From outside, the venue seems uninviting: its windows are painted black, and disco pulses from within. A doorman checks Clare’s identification, stamps their hands, and lets them enter.
Inside, Clare’s eyes adjust to a room filled entirely with women. They gather around a small stage, where a female stripper performs in a red sequined G-string and pasties, and socialize at the bar. It is Ladies’ Night, a setting that contrasts the anonymity of the dark exterior with the crowded, conspicuously female social world inside.
Clare, Celia, and Ingrid
Celia leads Clare toward a table where Ingrid sits alone with a tall glass of sky-blue liquid. Ingrid is visibly displeased when she sees Clare. Celia kisses Ingrid and invites Clare to sit, but Clare remains standing as the two women initially ignore her. Celia still has Clare’s books in her arms, a practical reminder that Clare came out with her for a social introduction rather than to confront Ingrid.
The arrangement makes Clare an unwilling participant in a meeting organized around Henry’s past. She imagines Henry kissing Ingrid’s red lips, but the scene offers no reconciliation or easy intimacy: Ingrid’s attention turns from Celia to Clare and then back to Celia, whose decision to bring her becomes the focus of Ingrid’s anger.
The Confrontation
Ingrid realizes that Celia knew what the encounter would mean and accuses her of bringing Clare to rub the situation in. Celia tries to answer, but Ingrid cuts her off, tells her to go to hell, and directs Clare to pass a message to Henry: he can go to hell, and Ingrid will see him there. She then stalks out of Berlin.
The outburst turns Celia’s proposed introduction into an unmistakable rejection and leaves Celia sitting with her face in her hands. Clare begins gathering her books to leave, but Celia asks her to wait. Berlin thus marks a sharp shift from the prospect of getting acquainted to an exposed fracture between former lovers and friends, with Clare caught between them as Henry’s new partner and Ingrid’s chosen messenger.
