Ida Bozeman
The TommyknockersIda Bozeman is Andy Bozeman’s wife and an armed participant in the attack on Bobbi Anderson’s farmhouse. Using a homemade device fashioned from a garden tool, she sets off the fire that brings the whirligig into play; when she tries to turn her weapon on it, the attempt comes too late, and she and Andy are killed. Her few actions show how improvised machinery in Haven can redirect human intentions and make an already dangerous confrontation irreversible.
Role and Arrival
Ida enters the episode with Andy as they arrive at Bobbi’s driveway. Andy is focused on Gardener, whom he believes to be dead, while Ida carries the molecule-exciter in her purse. The device’s frame had once belonged to a Weed Eater garden tool, an ordinary implement remade into a weapon. Its appearance, compared in the narrative to a Buck Rogers blaster made by a bright lunatic, places Ida’s action within Haven’s increasingly unstable mixture of domestic objects and dangerous invention.
The Attack on the Farmhouse
Leaning out of the car window, Ida pulls the trigger without aiming at a particular target. The shot strikes the east end of Bobbi’s farmhouse, which bursts into flames. The scene gives her an active role in the attack, but also stresses the randomness of its immediate result: she fires at random, and the house, rather than the whirligig, is hit.
As the Bozemans begin to get out of the Olds, the whirligig starts spinning and a green parasol of flame forms. Ida tries to aim her device at it, but she is too late. The narrative makes the missed first shot consequential: had it hit the whirligig instead of the house, events might have gone differently. The weapon she brought to exert force cannot now undo the danger her first shot helped set in motion.
Death and Consequence
The whirligig’s flame kills Ida and Andy, and moments later their Olds explodes. Their deaths follow directly from the sequence at the farmhouse: an improvised weapon ignites the building, the whirligig becomes active, and Ida’s belated attempt to target it fails. The episode closes on the replacement of one pair of screams by another, placing the Bozemans’ deaths within the continuing violence at Bobbi’s property.
Narrative Significance
Ida’s brief appearance is defined by a reversal between intention and consequence. She arrives with a weapon, fires it, and then tries to use it against a greater danger; the first shot has already altered the situation, and the second comes too late. The molecule-exciter is not merely an instrument under her control: as part of the scene’s chain of effects, it helps transform a confrontation into a fatal event. Her fate underscores how the town’s makeshift devices can magnify a moment of action beyond the actor’s ability to govern its outcome.
