Maine National Guard

The Tommyknockers

The Maine National Guard is the military force deployed to contain the crisis around Haven after the fire and the emergence of a lethal pollution zone. Its role grows from road closures into a widening armed perimeter: the Guard restricts access to the area even as the conditions it encounters kill responders and leave the town isolated.

Deployment and Expanding Perimeter

The response begins as the fire draws attention to Haven. By about seven in the evening, state police, assisted by the local National Guard unit, have blocked roads into the area, including minor roads as well as major routes. The danger proves larger than a conventional forest fire: efforts to approach the blaze meet lethal effects, and the fire spreads while responders struggle to reach it.

The Guard’s intervention is itself struck by the crisis. A bus carrying National Guardsmen from Bangor leaves the road and hits a tree after the driver dies; all seventy men aboard are lost, some in the crash and others while trying to escape the poisonous area. The episode makes the perimeter’s central contradiction concrete: the force sent to contain the emergency cannot safely enter the affected zone.

Isolation of Haven

By nightfall, the Maine National Guard has surrounded Haven. Guardsmen positioned downwind wear oxygen equipment, a measure that marks the boundary not only as a military line but as an environmental hazard. The town is cut off from the outside world, while the surrounding smoke, fire, and contaminated air make ordinary access dangerous.

The first perimeter is thin, staffed by guardsmen from Bangor and Augusta. It is reinforced by nine in the evening with troops from Limestone, Presque Isle, Brunswick, and Portland; by dawn, another thousand battle-equipped guardsmen have been flown in from cities in the Eastern Corridor. This rapid enlargement turns an improvised cordon into a substantial security operation, even as the force remains constrained by the area’s deadly conditions.

Narrative Significance

The Guard’s role links emergency protection with coercive containment. Its roadblocks keep people from entering the danger zone, but they also make Haven inaccessible to outsiders and leave its residents enclosed within the crisis. The deployment therefore changes the town’s status: a once-quiet place becomes a sealed-off site managed through checkpoints, military presence, and control of movement.

The novel sets this visible state response against an earlier fear that federal authorities would seize the buried spacecraft and dispossess the town. In the aftermath, that anticipated intervention gives way to a more immediate reality: the Guard’s perimeter surrounds Haven because the air and fire have made the area hazardous, while the scale of the disaster exceeds what the cordon can resolve.
