Spaceship-entry breathing apparatus

The Tommyknockers

The Spaceship-entry breathing apparatus is a modified respirator that Bobbi Anderson demonstrates to Jim Gardener before their entry into the Tommyknocker ship. Its design reverses the purpose of another respirator in Haven: rather than protecting its wearer from the town’s altered air, it draws on that air as the supply Bobbi and Gardener expect to breathe inside the ship. The device turns Haven’s dangerous atmosphere into a condition of passage, linking the town’s transformation to the attempt to cross into the buried vessel.

Design and Intended Use

At nine-thirty, Bobbi shows Gardener the apparatus. The respirators resemble one that Ev Hillman had obtained for Butch Dugan, but the similarity conceals a crucial difference in function. Dugan’s equipment is meant to protect him from Haven’s air; Bobbi’s modified apparatus uses Haven air, which is what she and Gardener intend to breathe once inside the Tommyknocker ship.

This distinction makes the apparatus more than a simple protective device. Its operation depends on the very environment that has become hazardous to people outside Haven, adapting the explorers to the conditions they plan to encounter rather than shielding them from those conditions. The evidence establishes that Bobbi demonstrates the apparatus and explains its intended air supply; it does not specify its construction, how the air is stored, or whether the equipment ultimately performs as planned.

Place in the Entry into the Ship

The apparatus belongs to the preparations for Bobbi and Gardener’s descent into the vessel. Their destination is an enclosed, canted corridor with a round form, a slanted walkway, and soft light glowing from featureless walls. The respirators anticipate this crossing: before they enter the ship, Bobbi equips Gardener with a means of breathing the air they expect to find within it.

That preparation carries the boundary of Haven into the ship. The town’s air is not merely an exterior danger from which the travelers can seal themselves off; it is also the atmosphere they plan to rely on during the expedition. The device therefore marks a threshold between the transformed town and the alien interior, while showing how survival in the latter depends on knowledge and adaptations acquired in the former.

Contrast and Significance

The comparison with Dugan’s respirator clarifies how one-looking object can serve opposite environmental purposes. Dugan needs protection against Haven; Bobbi and Gardener intend to breathe Haven air inside the ship. The contrast gives the modified apparatus its narrative force: it embodies a choice to move deeper into the danger by adapting to it, rather than treating escape from its conditions as the only form of safety.

The apparatus also sits within a broader landscape of improvised technology. Bobbi’s excavation has required a rebuilt truck and specialized machinery, while the respirators address a different obstacle: bodily access to the ship. Yet the evidence supports no specific claim that the apparatus itself changes, breaks, or fails. Its significance lies in what it is designed to enable and in the unsettling continuity it creates between Haven’s altered atmosphere and the space beneath the earth.
