Asia Minor
The Vampire LestatAsia Minor is a region on the route Lestat and Gabrielle take after departing Paris, a passage through ancient cities that marks both their continued movement across unfamiliar places and their growing distance from each other.
Place on the Journey
After traveling through Sicily, Lestat and Gabrielle head north into Greece and Turkey, then south again through the ancient cities of Asia Minor before reaching Cairo, where they remain for some time. The region is thus part of a broader circuit linking Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, rather than a destination where the pair settle permanently.
Gabrielle’s Growing Distance
As they travel south from Istanbul into Asia Minor, Gabrielle feels the allure of the new and strange land especially strongly. She is scarcely ever at Lestat’s side. The journey therefore carries a personal consequence as well as a geographical one: the unfamiliar country draws Gabrielle away from her companion, even as their travels continue together.
Messages to Marius
Across the cities and regions of this journey, Lestat writes messages to Marius on walls. Sometimes he scratches only a few words with a knife; elsewhere, he spends hours chiseling his thoughts into stone. Wherever he goes, he leaves his name, the date, and his future destination, along with an invitation for Marius to make himself known. Asia Minor belongs to this recurring practice of marking the route and reaching toward an absent figure: travel becomes both exploration and a continuing search.
