A Wish to Help An Encounter in the Shop In-hye meets her future husband when he comes into her cosmetics shop looking worn down. She responds with a simple offer of concern, asking whether he has eaten. His exhausted vulnerability draws her toward him, and she imagines that her own strength might give him a place to rest. Care as a Foundation Mr. Cheong praises In-hye’s steadiness and ability to manage ordinary life. She understands his words as respect and builds a marriage around the hope that loyalty and practical care can make a shared life secure. Yet his praise also rests on the very traits that make her useful and dependable. The beginning contains both tenderness and an imbalance. In-hye gives generously, while remaining uncertain whether her husband’s reliance on her amounts to love. That uncertainty becomes harder to ignore as his attention turns elsewhere.

A Household of Responsibilities The Work of Family Life In-hye combines running her shop with raising Ji-woo and maintaining their household. Mr. Cheong spends long stretches away, absorbed in his own work, while she handles much of the daily organization. She rarely makes demands beyond asking him to reserve some time for their son and family. Respect Without Intimacy Mr. Cheong recognizes her competence, but his admiration does not necessarily create closeness. He can regard her as a good and stable wife while remaining emotionally elsewhere. Their shared life grows increasingly functional, organized around responsibilities rather than mutual attention. In-hye’s perseverance keeps the household operating, but it also hides the cost of the arrangement. She has learned to treat endurance as an ordinary part of marriage, making it difficult to recognize how lonely the relationship has become.

The Sister’s Intrusion A Request to Visit When Mr. Cheong calls Yeong-hye’s sister after her own marriage has begun to fracture, In-hye welcomes the possibility that he might visit. She understands the difficulty of approaching Yeong-hye and believes that his presence could help reconnect the family. She does not know that his interest has become sexual and artistic. Trust Misread Mr. Cheong visits Yeong-hye and later uses her body as the center of an art project. In-hye’s casual mention of Yeong-hye’s persistent birthmark had helped inspire his fixation, but she had no reason to anticipate that his attention would become an affair and a filmed sexual encounter. Her willingness to encourage contact is later shadowed by self-blame. The episode reveals how differently the spouses understand intimacy and responsibility. In-hye acts from concern for her sister; Mr. Cheong uses the opening to pursue a private obsession. What she hoped might be an act of family care becomes a breach of trust that destroys her marriage.

The Betrayal Discovered Evidence in the Apartment In-hye arrives at Yeong-hye’s apartment and discovers the camcorder and recording. She sees Mr. Cheong and Yeong-hye on the tape, and the knowledge changes the meaning of the images and of her husband’s recent absences. Her shock is mixed with fear for her sister, who is naked and covered in paint, and anger at the husband who has brought them both into the situation. The Marriage Breaks In-hye tells Mr. Cheong that she has called emergency services and identifies both him and Yeong-hye as needing treatment. Her response is not an attempt to restore the marriage. It is a demand that the immediate danger be addressed, accompanied by a clear recognition that his conduct is unforgivable. The discovery ends the possibility that she can preserve the household by absorbing another injury. Mr. Cheong’s artistic explanation cannot repair the betrayal or erase the vulnerability of Yeong-hye. In-hye chooses separation over returning to the role of silent, accommodating partner.
Refusal of ReconciliationRefusal of Reconciliation from "The Vegetarian". Refusal of Reconciliation A Call About Ji-woo Mr. Cheong contacts In-hye once, asking to see Ji-woo.
Refusal of Reconciliation A Call About Ji-woo Mr. Cheong contacts In-hye once, asking to see Ji-woo. He does not begin by apologizing or asking after Yeong-hye. In-hye understands that if she refuses, he may not call again for a long time, but she ends the conversation without granting the request. A Boundary Held In-hye tells herself that there is no need for the two of them to forgive each other because she no longer knows him. The claim is not a sign that the past has disappeared; she still remembers their life and the circumstances of his departure. Rather, it is a boundary she uses to prevent his return from being mistaken for repair. The marriage’s emotional ending is therefore less a reconciliation or a clean release than a refusal to resume its old terms. In-hye continues to carry the consequences for herself and Ji-woo, while Mr. Cheong remains outside the family life he once shared.
