Betab
The Way of KingsBetab is a month in the Rosharan calendar whose clearest appearance fixes a death to an exact historical point. Its function is chronological rather than geographical or cultural: the month places a recorded utterance within the year 1171 and helps establish the documentary precision of the opening sequence.
Calendar and Chronological Function
Betab belongs to the calendar used to date events on Roshar. The surviving date identifies the fifth day of the week Chach in Betab of the year 1171, giving the narrative a formal temporal framework rather than leaving the event in an indefinite past. The date is presented as part of a collected record, so Betab operates as an archival marker: it turns a dying soldier’s final seconds into an entry that can be preserved, questioned, and situated within history.
The Recorded Death
The month is most directly associated with a darkeyed soldier’s death. The record states that the soldier was thirty-one years old and that his words were collected ten seconds before death. His declaration that he had been killed and would die while the sun was still hot is marked as questionable, making the entry both precise and unstable: the time is exact, but the reliability of the sample is explicitly disputed. Betab therefore appears at the intersection of measurement and uncertainty, giving the scene the surface of official documentation while preserving doubt about what the testimony means.
Relation to the Opening Narrative
The Betab date appears immediately before the narrative moves five years forward to Cenn’s impending death in battle. That placement creates a temporal hinge. The dated record closes one moment of violence, then the phrase marking the passage of five years introduces another young soldier confronting mortality. Betab consequently helps establish the book’s recurring movement between testimony, death, and later scenes whose meaning is shaped by what has already been recorded.
Narrative Significance
Betab is significant less as a developed setting than as a precision instrument within the novel’s chronology. Its appearance gives the opening an archival, retrospective quality and contrasts a bureaucratic notation—age, calendar date, and seconds before death—with the immediate human terror of dying speech. The month also participates in the book’s larger pattern of connecting distant places and lives through fixed dates, remembered events, and documents whose authority may be incomplete. Through Betab, time becomes evidence: a means of locating catastrophe, while not necessarily resolving the truth of what occurred.
