Half-Shards
The Way of KingsHalf-Shards are specialized fabrial shields whose defining achievement is the ability to block a Shardblade. They do not reproduce the full capabilities of Shardplate, but their existence challenges the assumption that Shardbearers alone possess reliable protection against Shardblade attacks. In military terms, they are a small device with consequences far larger than its size: a defensive technology capable of altering the balance between ordinary soldiers and the bearers of the most powerful weapons in Roshar.
Definition and Design
Half-Shards are described as shields created through fabrial technology. Navani reports that the Vedens have perfected them and call them “half-shards,” a name that presents them as an incomplete counterpart to Shardplate rather than a new form of Plate itself. Their protection is deliberately narrow. They can take only the shape of a shield and provide none of Plate’s other enhancements, so they do not grant the broader physical advantages associated with Shardplate.
Their construction combines metal with a gemstone. During the assault on the king, Szeth sees guards carrying distinctive diamond-shaped shields and recognizes them as Half-Shards. The king uses another, made of metal with a gemstone concealed at the back. The concealed gemstone identifies the device as a fabrial whose defensive effect depends on an infused component rather than on ordinary shield construction.
Development and Verification
Navani introduces Half-Shards as the first of three reasons for returning. She says that the Vedens have perfected the shields and that they claim the devices can stop blows from a Shardblade. Dalinar has already heard rumors of the invention, but he has dismissed such reports because men frequently promise new Shards without producing anything that fulfills those promises. His skepticism makes the technology’s status important: the claim is not accepted merely because it is politically useful or technically imaginable.
Navani cannot say that she has personally seen a Half-Shard in operation. Instead, she has confirmation from someone she trusts, who reports that the shields can block a Shardblade while offering none of Shardplate’s other enhancements. The evidence therefore remains indirect when she first presents it, but it is specific enough to transform the rumor into a credible military development. Dalinar regards the invention as a very small step toward Shardplate and remains unwilling to believe its full value until he has seen what the shields can do.
Military Use and Strategic Consequences
The practical significance of Half-Shards becomes visible when Szeth attacks the king. Men in Shardplate emerge carrying Shardblades, but additional defenders soon pour into the room with diamond-shaped Half-Shards. The new shields are explicitly identified as fabrials capable of stopping a Shardblade, demonstrating that the technology has already moved beyond rumor and into battlefield preparation.
The king also has a Half-Shard hidden beneath his table. When he confronts Szeth, he lifts the shield as part of a defense prepared specifically for an assassin who has already killed three highprinces. The device does not make the king a Shardbearer, nor does it give him Plate’s other abilities, but it supplies a crucial form of protection against the weapon Szeth carries. Its presence helps explain the confidence of the defenders and shows that Half-Shards can be deployed as coordinated defensive equipment rather than as isolated curiosities.
Political and Thematic Significance
Half-Shards connect technological innovation with the political anxiety surrounding the warcamps. Navani believes the warcamps have become the true center of the kingdom, and the information she brings from Kholinar is therefore not merely a technical report. A shield that can resist a Shardblade threatens an established hierarchy in which Shardblades and Shardplate mark an almost overwhelming distinction between their bearers and everyone else.
The device’s incompleteness is central to its meaning. Half-Shards are neither ordinary shields nor full Shardplate: they occupy an intermediate position, preserving the prestige and power of Shardbearers while making one part of that power resistible. Their name, limited shape, hidden gemstone, and restricted function all mark a technology defined by partial access. Yet that partiality is precisely what makes the invention consequential. A shield need not reproduce Plate’s speed, strength, or other enhancements to change the conditions under which a Shardblade can be used.
