Voidbinding

The Way of Kings

Voidbinding is a feared and poorly understood form of supernatural power whose central association is the attempt to divine the future. Its history is inseparable from the collapse of the Hierocracy: priests claimed visions and prophecies in order to control religious knowledge, but later investigations found those promises fabricated. At the same time, ancient testimony distinguishes Voidbinding from the Midnight Essence encountered during a night attack, leaving open the question of what powers and beings the term truly encompasses.

Definition and Moral Reputation

Voidbinding is described by Kadash as a dark and evil practice. Its essential impulse, in his account, was to seek knowledge of the future, a pursuit that the Heralds had themselves denounced. The danger therefore lies not merely in the power's effects but in its claim to forbidden knowledge: prophecy becomes a means of asserting authority over people who cannot verify what they are told.

This reputation was reinforced by the religious abuses of the Hierocracy. The priests presented mystical claims as evidence that ordinary people could not understand the Almighty or religion for themselves. Their alleged visions and prophecies created an atmosphere of secrecy and dependence, replacing openness with smoke, whispers, and priestly control. Voidbinding thus carries a double significance: it names a feared supernatural discipline, but it also marks the point where religious power becomes manipulation.

The Hierocracy and the Collapse of Prophecy

When the Hierocracy was overthrown, the Sunmaker interrogated its priests and examined their correspondence. That investigation reportedly found no genuine prophecies and no mystical promises from the Almighty. The priests had invented those claims to placate and control the population. In this historical account, the Hierocracy's public use of Voidbinding was therefore exposed as fraud rather than validated revelation.

The discovery creates an important distinction between the practice itself and the institutional story built around it. The priests' prophecies were fabricated, but that fact does not establish that every form of Voidbinding is impossible. Instead, it shows how easily an incompletely understood power can be converted into a political instrument. The term remains associated with deception because the institution that invoked it used mystery to prevent independent judgment.

Relation to the Desolations and Other Powers

Ancient testimony places Voidbinding near the history of the Desolations and the Voidbringers, but it does not identify every supernatural threat with Voidbinding. During a remembered encounter, a knight rejects the assumption that the attackers were Voidbringers, explaining that the entity present was Midnight Essence and that its release remained a mystery. Her distinction separates the immediate manifestation from the larger category of enemies associated with the Desolation.

That distinction also preserves uncertainty about the system's operation. Voidbinding is named as a dark discipline, while Midnight Essence is identified as a particular phenomenon; the evidence does not establish whether one produces the other or whether they merely belong to related traditions. The knight's testimony further suggests that reports about the approaching Desolation, including Harkaylain's warning that it is close, circulate through inherited knowledge and prediction without making the nature of Voidbinding transparent.

Levels, the Old Magic, and Unresolved Research

Ancient scholarship associates the ten orders of the Knights Radiant and the Heralds with the symbolic structure of the Ten Essences, a system represented by the Double Eye of the Almighty and echoed in the hourglass imagery connected with the Knights Radiant. Research notes that the ten levels of Voidbinding may belong somewhere within this paradigm, but the connection is explicitly unconfirmed.

The same research raises a further possibility: the Old Magic might be a counterpart or more esoteric extension of the Voidbindings. Yet the researcher is beginning to suspect that the Old Magic is something entirely different. Voidbinding therefore occupies a deliberately unstable place in the intellectual map of the world. It has a possible numerical structure, an apparent relationship to ancient powers, and a feared connection with prophecy, but none of those relationships has been securely explained.

Narrative Significance

Voidbinding functions as both a supernatural mystery and a warning about the politics of knowledge. The Hierocracy's false prophecies demonstrate that claims to see the future can discipline an entire society, while the surviving references to genuine or possible powers prevent the historical explanation from becoming simple debunking. The result is a persistent tension between fraud and reality: the priests lied, yet the world still contains forces that scholarship cannot classify.

Because its limits and mechanisms remain obscure, Voidbinding also acts as a boundary marker between known systems and deeper mysteries. It stands beside Surgebinding without being reduced to it, and beside the Old Magic without being clearly identical to it. Its narrative importance lies precisely in that incomplete definition. The term gathers fear, historical abuse, prophetic ambition, and the possibility of an older power whose structure has not yet been recovered.
