Galicia

The Wisdom of Crowds

Galicia is presented as a working center of Zara’s fast, flexible retail system. The Spanish region is associated both with the company’s headquarters and design rooms in La Coruña and with a network of small workshops that assemble its garments, linking local production to stores around the world.

Zara’s Regional Base

Zara’s million-square-foot warehouse is in La Coruña, in Galicia. From there, the company’s design rooms are connected to store managers, who use handheld devices to report daily on what customers buy, reject, or ask for. This information helps Zara make products in response to current demand rather than relying solely on forecasts made months in advance.

Local Workshops and Production

After fabric is cut, a network of roughly three hundred small shops in Galicia and northern Portugal assembles it into skirts, dresses, and suits. These workshops are described as partners rather than simply suppliers. Their independent craftsmanship sits within a production system Zara can still direct, giving the company flexibility over its final products.

Role in Zara’s Operating Model

The regional workshops complement Zara’s fourteen highly automated factories in Spain. The factories allow small production runs and quick increases in output when a design proves popular; the workshops complete the garments. Together with twice-weekly deliveries and rapid information from stores, this arrangement supports Zara’s ability to move from designing a dress to selling it in ten to fifteen days. Galicia thus figures not as incidental scenery, but as part of the local production network that makes the company’s speed possible.
