“Wherefore art thou, Romeo”
Thirteen Reasons Why“Wherefore art thou, Romeo?” is the expression Hannah Baker uses to open her recorded story, turning a familiar line from Romeo and Juliet into a question of presence, absence, and uncertain attachment. Its return within the tape’s exchange with Clay Jensen makes the phrase both an opening signal and a measure of what the story cannot resolve.
Opening a Story
As Tony drives through an empty parking lot toward the street, Clay runs his thumb across the top of the Walkman, searching by touch for the button that will bring him back into Hannah’s story. The line follows that small physical gesture: “Romeo, oh Romeo. Wherefore art thou, Romeo?” Hannah immediately claims the recording as her own—“My story. My tape. This is how it begins.”—so the Shakespearean invocation becomes the threshold of a personal account rather than an ornamental reference.
A Question Without an Answer
The expression’s traditional wording asks where Romeo is, but the tape turns the question toward an unknown answer. Hannah responds to the implied question with regret that she does not know it; the exchange preserves uncertainty instead of supplying a romantic resolution. The phrase therefore introduces a story shaped by longing and absence while withholding any simple assurance that the person being addressed can be found.
Clay as Listener
The scene places the line inside an act of listening. Clay’s hand finds the Walkman’s control before he re-enters the recorded narrative, while Tony calls reassurance over the engine. The movement from a physical button to Hannah’s opening words makes the recording feel like a passage Clay can enter again, even as its meaning remains beyond his control.
Later in the same sequence, Hannah says that there was never a point when she identified Clay as the one. That qualification complicates the romantic expectation raised by the Romeo reference: the language evokes a beloved figure, but the story does not confirm a destined pairing. The expression’s force lies in that tension between the romance it invokes and the uncertainty Hannah leaves in its place.
