Hannah leaves the Oh My Dollar Valentine survey in the ballot box

Thirteen Reasons Why

Hannah leaves the Oh My Dollar Valentine survey in the ballot box after filling it out during third-period history, choosing uncertainty over the easy option of taking it back. The small gesture gathers together her fear of being judged through rumors, her uncertainty about what other students might do with her answers, and a missed possibility of speaking honestly with Clay Jensen.

The survey in history class

In the routine of Coach Patrick’s third-period history class, Hannah bubbles in her answers as soon as the surveys are handed out. The ordinary classroom exercise is meant to pair students for Valentine’s Day, but for Hannah it immediately carries the weight of her existing reputation: she wonders whether boys who see her name on a list will treat the survey as permission to ask her out, and whether rumors about her will make them more eager to try.

That concern makes the ballot box more than a place to submit a form. Hannah notices that the slot is too narrow for her fingers, but the lid can be lifted. She could take the survey out, and she imagines explaining to Ms. Benson that she is embarrassed to have completed a love survey. The action would be simple; the difficulty is deciding whether retrieving it would protect her or merely answer fear with another retreat.

Choosing not to retrieve it

Hannah measures the survey against two possibilities. Perhaps it is only a joke and nobody will act on it; she tells herself to calm down and not assume she is setting herself up. But if her suspicion is right, she fears that she has given someone an excuse to test the rumors about her. She cannot settle on how she would respond: she might shrug it off, become angry, or give up.

Rather than lift the lid and remove her answer, Hannah leaves the survey in the box and waits to see what happens. The choice is not presented as confidence. She walks away unsure whether she is an optimist or a pessimist, and calls herself a fool. That self-description captures the action’s uncertainty: leaving the paper there preserves the chance of an outcome she cannot predict, while exposing her to the possibility she fears.

The answer she did not give

The survey also creates a counterfactual centered on Clay. Hannah recognizes that, if she had answered honestly, she would have described him. She imagines that they might then have talked seriously, rather than joking as they had the previous summer at the movie theater. But she did not fill out the survey with that possibility in mind, and does not take it back to change her answer.

Clay’s side of the same uncertainty is shaped by his memory of Hannah since Kat’s going-away party. He has kept thinking about the difference between how she looks and behaves and what he has heard about her, yet fear that she might laugh at him stops him from asking her out. He leaves the office with his own survey still in the box, not knowing whether he is optimistic or pessimistic. Their parallel hesitation makes the uncollected forms a quiet missed opening: the survey might have brought them toward an honest conversation, but neither turns it into one.

Significance and limits of the gesture

The scene gives a routine Valentine’s activity an uneasy double meaning. A match survey invites students to make attraction legible through names and answers; Hannah experiences that invitation through the risk that her answer will be interpreted in light of rumors. Her hesitation therefore comes not simply from embarrassment about a crush, but from uncertainty over who might use the survey and what they believe they already know about her.

Leaving the form in the box does not itself resolve that uncertainty or establish what any student will do with it. Its significance lies in the choice to wait despite fear, and in the possibility of connection that remains unspoken. The action’s quiet ending is neither a confident advance nor a definitive refusal: Hannah leaves her answer behind, while the conversation she can imagine with Clay remains only a possibility.
