Myrkur's Condition for Restoring Mermaid Form

Tide

Myrkur's Condition for Restoring Mermaid Form is the condition Myrkur sets for Meira to recover her mermaid body and return to the sea: she must kill the new queen with an enchanted blade. The offer promises restoration and renewed life in Meira's own realm, but makes that return depend on the queen's death.

The Condition and Its Offer

Myrkur tells Galahad Stormcrane that Meira's sisters brought her an enchanted blade that day, while Meira stood on the lower balcony of Perlkastel. Myrkur describes it as a weapon for killing the new queen. She then explains the condition directly: Meira need only strike the queen through the heart, and she will return to the sea in her true form.

The promised reward is framed in terms of both bodily restoration and time regained. Myrkur says Meira is only fifty years old, young for a mermaid whose life ought to last three hundred years. In Myrkur's account, the condition offers Meira the chance to live once more in her own realm for the full span of her rightful life.

Connection to the Seal

Myrkur links the offer to Galahad Stormcrane's transfer of the seal to an elf-blooded woman who could rightfully hold it after marrying a king. She says she knew Galahad would make that choice and felt the rite as he performed it. In her account, killing the queen would therefore restore Meira while also allowing Myrkur to take the seal.

The condition thus joins a personal promise to a larger struggle over the seal. Meira's return to mermaid life is presented not as an independent transformation, but as the consequence of an act that would remove the queen and leave the seal within Myrkur's reach.

Disputed Motive and Stakes

Galahad responds that Meira would never kill the queen. Myrkur counters that she has known Meira since the first beat of her heart and claims Meira desires to live and hates the queen for taking the man she loves. These are Myrkur's assertions, not a choice Meira makes in this exchange; the scene presents the offer through the witch's account and Galahad's immediate disbelief.

The condition turns Meira's longing for her former body, home, and full lifespan into a threat to the queen and the seal. When Myrkur predicts that Meira will kill the queen, Galahad falls silent, freezes, and trembles with his left hand on his sword. His reaction marks the danger of the proposed bargain without confirming that Meira accepts it or carries out the act.
