To the Lighthouse

Creative Commons appears in the edition’s front matter as the organization associated with the work’s reuse terms. The notice makes the text available for a range of uses while attaching conditions to that permission, and explicitly preserves the possibility of waivers and rights outside the license.

Identity and Licensing Role

The edition identifies the work as licensed under a Creative Commons Licence and points readers to the license terms. The organization’s role here is practical and legal: the notice tells readers what they may do with the work and what obligations accompany those uses. It does not present the license as an unrestricted dedication to the public domain.

Permissions and Conditions

Readers are permitted to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work, and to make derivative works. Those freedoms are conditional: users must give attribution in the manner specified by the licensor, may not use the work for commercial purposes, and, if they alter, transform, or build upon it, may distribute the resulting work only under a license identical to the original one.

The notice also requires anyone reusing or distributing the work to make its license terms clear to others. This transparency requirement extends the conditions beyond the person making a copy: recipients are to be told the terms governing their own use. The license therefore couples broad permission with requirements for attribution, noncommercial use, continuity of licensing for adaptations, and clear communication.

Waivers and Retained Rights

The terms allow any of these conditions to be waived if permission is obtained from the licensor. They also state that fair-use and other rights are not affected. The license is thus presented as a defined set of permissions and restrictions, not as a replacement for every other legal basis on which the work may be used.
