Sun-Blast

Sun-Blast is a dragon form that appears in two sharply different contexts: as the frightening possibility in Elena’s dream as she nears Ascending, and as Constance’s missing young child amid the devastation wrought by the Creepers. Together, these references connect personal transformation with the uncertain fate of dragon families affected by the fall of Etan.

Elena’s Dream and Ascending

At seventeen, Elena is told that she is growing closer to Ascending. She does not feel different, and nothing paranormal has happened to her apart from a dream in which she became a Sun-Blast and killed Brian. The dream gives her approaching transformation a disturbing image, but it does not establish that the change has begun or that its violence will occur outside the dream. Elena’s own response is matter-of-fact: she feels unchanged despite the possibility her age and the dream raise.

Constance’s Lost Child

Sun-Blast also describes Constance’s three-year-old child, whom she lost when the Creepers took the place while Constance was away at a conference in Elm. Constance had lived in a small village on the border of Etan, and the child’s fate is unresolved: Constance does not even know what her daughter’s human form looks like, if she is still alive. The account therefore presents a Sun-Blast not as a feared vision but as a child whose identity and survival have been obscured by catastrophe.

Meaning and Consequences

The two appearances place the concept between anticipated change and irreversible loss. For Elena, becoming a Sun-Blast belongs to a dream connected to her approaching Ascending; for Constance, the term names a daughter separated from her family and possibly still alive. The surrounding devastation sharpens that uncertainty: the Creepers are close to the border, and the village may no longer exist. The book offers no confirmation of the child’s fate, leaving Sun-Blast associated both with Elena’s unease about what she may become and with Constance’s inability to know what became of her daughter.
