Nathan Bradley

Always

Nathan Bradley is a family man and internet-security expert whose work takes him around the country, but his importance to the search for Paige comes through his family and friendships. He is Gillian’s husband, Linc Granger’s close friend, and a father whose everyday care for his children gives the novel’s missing-person investigation a distinctly domestic frame: the search is conducted by people whose own lives are rooted in family bonds.

Identity and Family

Linc introduces Nathan to Emma as a man with two daughters from his first marriage, whom he sees often, and a little boy, Matthew, from his second marriage. He describes Nathan’s family history before his occupation, a detail Emma appreciates. Nathan’s work is technically demanding and mobile: he is an internet-security expert who flies across the country to look after important clients’ networks. The contrast between his wide-ranging professional travel and his close involvement with his children makes family a defining part of his introduction.

Nathan’s family life also includes a notably affectionate role as a father to Matthew. Gillian tells Emma that the boy wakes readily at night, sometimes seeming to wait for his parents to make a sound so he can call out to them. Nathan treats those wake-ups as time for himself and Matthew, getting up to play with his son rather than leaving him to cry. Linc calls him a softie. This small domestic anecdote makes Nathan’s care concrete: his devotion appears not as a declaration but as a willingness to turn the middle of the night into their time together.

Friendship and the Search for Paige

Nathan’s friendship with Linc is longstanding and familial in practice. Linc says he used to babysit for Nathan before Nathan married Gillian and still does so; the children call him Uncle Linc. That history helps explain why Linc can approach Gillian for help when Emma needs to find her missing sister. Nathan is not himself shown conducting the search, but his marriage to Gillian and friendship with Linc establish the network through which Emma reaches the people who can investigate.

The search draws on complementary forms of expertise. Gillian works with Jake Donovan, a former police officer turned private investigator, to find missing people, especially children. They established a foundation for that purpose, supported by donations from people they have helped. Linc explains that Nathan first found Gillian through Jake as a last resort after his former wife disappeared with his daughters; Gillian located them. Her ability gives her sensations and feelings about missing people, which the investigators test against information gathered from relatives and Jake’s research. Linc’s account of Nathan’s family crisis therefore supplies the personal history behind the work now being offered to Emma.

A Network of Investigative Methods

Nathan’s indirect presence in the case is clearest in the division of labor around the investigation. Gillian contributes her impressions, while Jake pursues records and other hard evidence. When Gillian and Jake examine Paige’s digital trail, they consider her laptop, old emails, social-networking accounts, and phone records. Jake finds posts connecting Paige to Tim Levine, including renewed activity months before her disappearance and an email in Paige’s recycle bin thanking Levine for being there and saying she would call soon. His San Diego address gives a verifiable point of connection for Gillian’s impression that the city matters.

The investigators’ methods are presented as complementary rather than interchangeable. Jake seeks facts that can confirm Gillian’s impressions, while the digital material—public posts, a recovered email, and phone records—offers different kinds of evidence. The account also notes a basic security risk when Emma says her passwords are saved automatically: Jake warns that this common practice creates a security problem. Although Nathan is not credited with gathering these clues, his expertise in internet security sits within the story’s wider network of skills, where technical knowledge and personal connections both contribute to the search.

Nathan’s Place in the Story

Nathan is not a viewpoint character in the evidence presented, and he does not take the lead in Emma’s investigation. Instead, he helps define the relationships and prior experiences that make the search possible. His own history—having once lost contact with his daughters when his former wife disappeared with them—links Gillian’s ability to the work she and Jake now do. Linc’s account of that history makes clear that Gillian’s involvement in missing-person cases is not merely professional; it first answered an urgent need within Nathan’s family.

His family life offers a counterpoint to the uncertainty surrounding Paige. The investigators follow incomplete traces and pursue a woman whose whereabouts are unknown, while Nathan’s story is marked by the recovery of his daughters and by daily care for Matthew. At the wedding near the end, Emma looks around at Jake, Sara, Christopher, Gillian, Nathan, and Matthew among the gathered friends and family. Nathan appears there as part of the community surrounding Emma and Linc as they begin married life. The closing scene gathers the investigator network into a family setting, echoing the domestic attachments that first distinguished Nathan in Linc’s introduction.
